...witnessed Frisco steam while it was in Frisco service?

...stood trackside along the Frisco before the BN merger?

...been inside an active Frisco Depot?

    ...ridden a Frisco passenger train?

    ...ridden a Frisco mixed?

    ...ridden a Frisco locomotive?

...eaten in a Frisco diner, buffet, or lounge?

    ...worked for the Frisco?

    ...shipped it on the Frisco?

...stood on an abandoned Frisco ROW or stared at a cold Frisco steam locomotive display and wondered, what must it have been like?

It gets into the blood and will not out.

    Merry Christmas to all!

    Karl -

    Good thinking question!

For me: No (only 1522 and 1630 later), yes (many, many times), yes (Rolla, St James, Newburg, Webster Groves, StLUS), yes (#'s 3,4,9,10), no, yes (1522 & 1630, but not in Frisco service), yes (lounge/buffet on #9), no, yes (but not often), and YES! It is indeed in the blood permanently.

Unfortunately, I was only able to remember seeing a Frisco freight once - outside Osceola of all places. I was there for the low water dam demolition and a GP came by with a handfull of cars. And of course, I didn't have a camera with me.

  5. I can only answer yes to the last question. I think the closest I come to any of the other questions is having had worked on a mixed train, over ex-Frisco rails.

Yes to all, except # 1
I have ridden the Frisco Business Car and eat on it, along with the Geometry Car if that counts.
I have also Flew on the Frisco Air Plane from Springfield to Charlotte, S.C.
I did ship on the Frisco, all company stuff, if that counts

Other than "...ridden a Frisco mixed?" I think I have done all ot them, including both dead head company material and redceiving personal goods in the days of Railway Express.

I usually tread over the old Salem Branch everytime I visit my parents in Wesco. It is, after all, only about 50 ft. from their house. I remember trains on it, but not many.

Speaking of, my wife and I are going to run the Frisco 50k Weekend in Willard Missouri this spring. Well, okay, I'm going to do the 8k and she's going to run the marathon, which will be her fifth. She's doing it for the challenge and to possibly qualify for the Boston Marathon. I'm doing it for the free t-shirt with Frisco art work. I think it's a great way to remember the Frisco's High Line. My thoughts, just as they are on the Katy Trail, will be imagining rails, ties, and trains until the pain hits.

    Splendidly put.

While my life experience only allowed me to say "yes" to a few of these, I count myself pretty darn lucky to have been able to look out my front door and see orange/white locomotives sitting by the depot.

    Best Regards,

Haven't seen steam/stood (and photographed) trackside/been in a depot/rode a passenger train/stood on an abandoned ROW/photographed a cold locomotive/wrote a book. Didn't work for the company, but my father and grandfather did.

I can answer yes to all of them except riding in a Frisco steam engine, but I was in the cab of 4516 when I was six years old as it sat dead in Ft. Scott, KS before being given to Missouri State Fair Grounds. I have been in several Frisco Diesels including a cab ride in a SD45 all the from KC, KS 19th street to Ft. Scott, KS, I rode with my Father in the Caboose on the way back. I have been behind the 1522, and 1630 in union, Il. Rode many of the Frisco passenger trains with my brother and Mother when I was only 10 years old. Been in Ft. Scott, KS depot when it was active, as well as, Springfield, MO. I will not bore you with more details.

I did (most) all those except ride in a steam engine. One of my earliest memories was going down to the (Springfield) depot late at night with my dad (I was probably four or five). He was either shipping or picking up an express shipment. Train 105 was sitting in the station with one of the Firefly engines on the point. I didn't now what the "Firefly" actually was, but I remember one of the guys driving the little tractor pulling the baggage wagons told my dad it was a "Firefly." As an adult I got to ride the Meteor a few times and eat in the diner.

    Tom

PS: When I was a kid fireflys were "lightning bugs."

...stood trackside along the Frisco before the BN merger?

    * Yes: More times than I'll ever be able to recall/remember.

...been inside an active Frisco Depot?

    * Yes: Van Buren when "Buddy" Stedman was the Agent. We became friends for a while, even fishing together, that is until the VB agency was closed and he had to go elsewhere. During that time I would often sit at the Depot and visit with Buddy until dark-thirty... often helping with any orders to hoop up to the northward train that night.

    ...ridden a Frisco locomotive?

    * Yes, more times than I can remember/recall. My tutorage started early (1970 or '71) with the late Harry Carrol, (he ran steam engines early in his long Frisco career), as well as Winston Harvey (he was Hostler at Fort Smith at the time) and later Ralph MacAddams (another Fort Smith guy). I first sat in the seat and handled the controls under the late Harry Bridges out of Fort Smith, AR. Many, many Frisco guys helped me learn the railroading trade. I still use skills they taught me on a daily basis in order to earn my living. (Like power braking, courtesy Winston Harvey.)

...stood on an abandoned Frisco ROW or stared at a cold Frisco steam
locomotive display and wondered, what must it have been like?

    * Yes, many times... still do it, though not just the Frisco... basically any road bed I happen to find interesting. (For example, I've been many a' mile over abandoned narrow gauge roadbeds in Colorado.)

    * It gets into the blood and will not out.

    True, so true.

Yes, many times as a child. My grandparents and my aunt and uncle all lived next to the tracks in Southern Missouri. My grandfather worked for the Frisco (he was born in 1891 so he retired before I was born) and they lived right next to the tracks. Their house was so close to the tracks that the ground shook when the trains went by.

    Merry Christmas everyone.

Yes to all except riding the mixed (I think) worked or shipped on the Frisco.
Wish I could go back to the beginning with today's cameras and video stuff. Used to watch trains at Shrewsbury Ave, Old Orchard and Webster Groves long before the first road diesels. Rode several of them with my Dad, hung around the Lindenwood RH, been in the Cuba and Newburg depots a few times, rode behind steam in passenger trains and ate in diners.
I'm sorry for those who didn't experience the Frisco back then.

I can answer a happy "YES" to all but Ship It. I never had any "ITs" to ship. As to working....anyone remember the "Student Switchman" era?

Merry Christmas to all, and to all a FRISCO good night!

I can only echo Keith's statement.

Of course, I was only 4 when the BN merger occurred. My parents tell me they used to watch my eyes follow every car across the grade crossings....

I can say yes to all of them I started working for the Frisco in 1952 the steam engine was just going out of service i worked in KC both 19th and Rosedale yards as a clerk and then as a trainmaster before being transfreed to Tulsa and the hump yard
It was never the same after the merger. But I can still have good memories of the good old "Ship it on the fFriscof"

Thats kinda neat. My grandfather was born in 1890, worked for Frisco 47 years. I started in 1970, but as one said it was never the same after the merger. It really turned sour with ATSF. Although ATSF was a great RR. Krebs hurt substantially. Spoiled rotten.
