Now that I own an RS2 and, since the Pennsylvania GP7s are plentiful, I thought it would be cool to build a RS2 with a GP7 long hood and a Bachmann DCC chassis underneath in N Scale. Thoughts? John Moore Location Imaging
Well, technically, it was a GP18 long hood on the EMD repowered Frisco RS-2's, SLSF 550-554, with a de-tuned 567C engine to match the 567B's that were in the GP7's. Ken
I saw the Rock Island non d/b RS-2M but it didn't look right to me. I'm now looking for a Life-like Gp18 non-d/b long hood and a cheaper DCC chassis for this thing to go on. I hope the RS-2 that I have coming is DCC ready. It amazes me that I'm putting this much thought into a locomotive that my dad hated. Oh well, JFM
I now have a GP18 long hood ready to go on my RS2, but it is significantly too long. Any thoughts? JFM
CMR products has this RS2 and I cut the RS2 off if you will and I was planning on using the M part (long hood) on my 550 RS2... Thoughts?
I was planning on using the entire RS2M body, but the front and rear porches were once again bowed up and the couplers would be way high. Solution, use the original RS2 sans high hood and high hood from RS2M.
Hey John, here's my project roughed in. It started out as a Life Like RS-2, with an Atlas late phase GP-9 long hood with 36" fans removed, 48" fans shaved of an Atlas SD-24 shell, and a few Miniatures By Eric details. The front number boards are shaved off the original RS-2 long hood and attach to short hood at a 45 degree angle. Debating on correcting the shorter doors on the rear(near the cab) of the long hood. The walkway on the front is a little close quarters, but it's narrow on the prototype. Hope this helps. Ed
Beautiful work. I think my front porch will also be as short as yours. Time to check the prototype pics... Thanks, JFM
Just wondering, where did you get the beacon, horn and spark arrestor stacks? Miniatures by Eric? This is an N scale model, right?
Yes John, this is N scale, the horns are from BMLA, the beacon, and spark arrestors are Miniatures by Eric. I missed the boat on using Details West, my favorite detail company from my HO scale days. Ed
Well, a little progress on the RS-2M. The CMR shell was modified by using a Dremel cut-off disc to remove everything except the long hood. Next, I either make the decision to cut apart the Life-Like RS-2 551 that I already own or buy another one and cut it apart. I kind of want to keep this one in original shape because I'm a hoarder. No wait! A collector... JFM
Well, I finally found an hour last night to sit down and think about how to attack this project. I purchased two more Frisco RS2 locomotives in preparation for converting one and hopelessly messing one up. Well, here goes...
I used a Dremel tool to cut off the long hood from the stock RS2 and used a sheet of 320 grit sandpaper on glass to square off and clean off the cut on the cab side off the short hood...
