Andre, William Brillinger is with PDC,Precision Design Company. Will email him after we get more information on what paint color we need to order. Do you know any other decal companies that we can contact?

I just got an email from Hubert Mask and he gave us a quote for HO decals. Each set would retail for $7.00 but our cost for the historical society would be $4.20 each. N scale retails for $5.00 and our cost would be $3.00 each. I will try to contact other decal companies and let you know what they say.

Andre, Mask will make one set for our approval once we select the color and supply him with the graphics. Can I have him send it to you for testing purposes? If so please PM me your address.

I did send him a couple of photos so he could see what the goal was.

    1. Looking as close as I can .. I think that R+3W+Y is a better choice.

    2. Why not put a few yellow stripes on the set for the passenger E units? Seems reasonable to me. Am I missing something?

Sherrel, I guess I not understanding what you are seeing about the E-8 yellow stripes. Sorry! Would you post a couple of photos for me? We can have Mask Island put those on the decals. I don't think anyone would have a problem with that.

The simplified yellow stripped version of E-8s. Same numbers and name, just nose stripes, stripes between the port holes, and frame stripes. Ed

    Hi All:

    Joe: You have a PM.

Adding more work to the set:

As to adding yet more stripes to cover the "Meteorite" paint scheme: The proposed artwork (the defunct Oddballs set) for the B&Y stripe set is already a LARGE set, and likely once the decal printers see it, will probably adjust their prices accordingly. Adding even more striping (nose/etc) that needs to be contoured so as to fit an E unit nose to an already large set may complicate the issue quite a bit. Also, I believe the "Meteorite" set was printed by Herald King and may show up on eBay if periodic searches are made? Lastly, I also think the "Meteorite" yellow and the yellow used on stripe units are not the same yellow? (The E's seemed brighter with more yellow content.)

    Color:

My interpretation of the stripe color stems from a color chip I peeled off one of the black and yellow striped Frisco GP7's decades ago.

    General:

I originally was going to have B&Y stripe/font sets commissioned for my own use and then offer any surplus to those interested.

I'm more than willing to help in this effort by being a liaison between the decal printer and our consensus, but to try to extensively modify the existing artwork with more add-ons will drive the cost up as well as add more complication to artwork and so forth. Hence it is still my feeling that a comprehensive E unit set needs to be a separate project. (i.e. One E unit set containing the "Meteorite" and "Dab Of Yellow" schemes. The Gold and Gold w/white outline schemes would need to be yet another run on account of them being a different print color.)

Hopefully we can all come together in agreement. My proposal from the onset was simply: Use the existing artwork from the defunct Oddballs B&Y stripe set with improved yellow and go with it. I realize there may be some very minor tweaks as the decal supplier feels is in order/etc, but no significant add-ons/etc to complicate the issue.

It would be great to do it corporately, but I will pursue a commission of them personally for my own use if not, and offer surplus to those interested as mentioned above.

Andre, I welcome the idea that you take the lead from this point on! My experience with decals goes back to when rocks were soft. You have the color description down and the experience with decals. I applaud you!!! I'm happy for bringing the project to this point. It took a few days but we can celebrate that we have special run in work and maybe in a few more days we will have a finished product in our hands. Soon we will be planning our next project.

I'd be in for one B/Y set for my (still) undecorated Alco RS1. If I could get those AT&N sub-letters with it, maybe more as I might "stencil" some other equipment.

We probably need to have a discussion on which B/Y diesel decals we want to have manufactured. Will it be a RS-1, GP-7, VO-1000 or other?

    Hello Joe:

Thanks for your assistance. Precision Design Company's Bill Brillenger has already initiated contact, to which I will try to respond to later tonight.

As for your latest question: The set I have in mind will be all inclusive. That is, it will letter the hood units in any phase of stripe scheme. So, you purchase one set and it will letter a couple or so engines in whatever variation your prototype subject calls for.

    Sounds great!!!

Would you please add the AT&N logo to the set for the RS-1 locomotive models?

    Joe and other sub-lettering fans:

If we are able to reproduce all of the variations that was found on the defunct Oddballs set, the AT&N and SL-SF sub-lettering will already be included. I hope to include more than just one each of the above sub-lettering though, given it will be a simple "copy/paste" operation to do so in today's computer world.

    To All Interested In This:

I just sent an email response to Precision Scale Decals, Bill Brillenger, (Mr. Brillenger is the first of the two decal suppliers to contact me) outlining what we hope to accomplish and I have offered to scan examples for use as to where we hope to go with this set. I'm sure I'll hear from him tomorrow sometime.

    Lastly:

Be advised the original Oddballs Set was a TWO SHEET decal set that essentially covers all the hood units (GP's, RS's, NW's, S-2's, small GE's, etc). I expect this set to be likewise. Because of it being a two sheet set, I highly suspect THAT fact will alter the above decal supplier's "guesstimate" price.

    All for now.

How about also including the small numbers in the correct font, size and color for use in the coonskin number plate mounted on the nose of the b/y VO-1000's, VO-660's and DS-44-1000's?

    Hi Ken:

    Excellent idea.

    All interested:

As we get down to brass tacks (final details/decisions/etc), we may learn that it might be to our advantage to do as we discussed above: Segregate the sets into "type specific" sets so we each don't have as much leftovers. If we followed the Oddballs set specifically (which includes one set of each scheme as well as one set as needed for engine types), then I intended to offer up my unused portions to those that needed them and/or for trade with your unused portions that I need.

However, it may be advantageous to us to break them into engine type specific sets, such as GP7, RS-1/RS-2, Switchers/etc.

I'm confident I'll know more, and have more information to share, over the coming days/weeks. It is a busy time for me right now (winter passenger train season so I'm working 6 days a week) so fret not if no updates for a spell.

Requests for the B/Y diesels has reached 72 sets! We started this project on 1/15 so that's not bad to go from infancy to a project on drawing board in two weeks. Andre is doing a great job propelling the project to the finish line
