The red is showing too pale in the images. Oh well, now for some mud, dirt, rust and and a load.

You're a better man than than I, Tom. All that visible air piping/etc!

Yessiree... I'd much prefer to be pulling my hair out on a P2K Kato re-power than tinkering with a flatcar!!

(Sigh.) Sometimes our anal-ness takes us down some pretty bizarre roads.

Thanks Steve, Andre and everyone for the comments and likes. I knew when I started all that piping it was gonna be a bearcat, and there is still more to add. I finally got the transformer load more complete. I hope it will turn out OK.

Great stuff Tom! A work of art that just keeps getting better.

I did not make the Wednesday deadline this week, as the Blues went to OT, and caused much distraction. Here is a quick contribution.

The new section between Cherokee and the Lightning Creek Mine is coming along. Over the past weekend, I was able to get the PC ties (Gap Masters) at the section boundaries soldered, as well as the rail joiners. I dropped feeders for the power. I still need to cut the track at the boundaries with a razor saw and wire up the main bus to the feeders. The track was cleaned and then airbrushed with "Rail Brown" from MicroMark. I will go back and weather the ties and rails, coloring selected individual ties with rail tie brown paint and colored pencils to give variety. I usually weather the rail with some Pan Pastels for rusty colors (to-do). You can see that the bridge over the creek is still a foam block...that will become a wood trestle.

You can maybe see that I went through and started the first layer of "dirt" over the painted foamboard scenery. I used a product from Arizona Rock and Mineral called "Cumbres Earth," which I suppose was collected from the tourist railroad--maybe not.

This is a base layer, and I will start static grass and additional terrain tonight and will work on this during the Memorial Day weekend.

The corner over by the mine will get a scene as a mining camp. I think the building that @Jim James donated will fit in nicely here. The other buildings are stand-ins. Apologies for no backdrop in these photos.

There will be a grade crossing here, and I am planning to work that and some of the land around this area (including near the creek) with this stuff, which is from several products by Golden that I am experimenting with for the layout scenery:

From Midwest Model Railroad came a couple of kits for the mining camp scene. Will build and beat these up as part of that area:

So, lots to do still. With the Redbirds and Blues to entertain, and A/C in the garage, it should be a peaceful weekend (fingers crossed). Hope it is the same for you all.

    Take Care,

    -Bob T.

  10. Nice stuff Bob. You never let up do you.

  11. Here’s mine for the week. I’m actually working on a farm from Walthers. I do not enjoy structures at all but these are coming around at least. Thanks for lookin!

Great stuff, Steve. I could really use that barn for my new layout section. Do you have the name/part number of the kit(s)?

    Bob,

The kits are from Walthers, their Cornerstone product line.

Lancaster Farm House - 933-3333 or nearly identical, reverse image - Tillman Farm House 933-3789

Meadowhead Barn - 933-3330 or Antiques Barn - 933-3339 (same basic kit)

Chicken Coop and Sheds - 933-3346

The under construction addition to the dwelling is a kit-bash add on using balsa or scale lumber. Typical dwelling framing consists of 2" x 4" or 2" x 6" (less common) vertical studs and 2" x 8" (light loads / short span) or 2" x 10" (more common) horizontal joists and diagonal rafters. Door and window openings should have king studs supporting 2" x 10" headers.

Related structure kits include the following items.

Fieldstone Barn Base and Foundation - 933-3331

    Concrete Style Silo - 933-3332

Items identified above are HO scale. In their N-scale line the Lancaster Farm House - 933-3890 and a combined Meadowhead Barn and Silo kit - 933-3892 are available.

Please see the following link https://www.walthers.com/walthers_cornerstone/scale-ho_scale?product_list_limit=240.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

    Mark

  14. Thanks Mark. You were all over that.

Thanks Bob. They are easy to build but pretty good detail and easy to add more.

  16. Ok framing corrections are made. I never considered anyone would really look at that. Jacks, kings and cripples in place. Both sides of the header in now. I made corner posts too. But for material width it was just what I had on hand. I feel like I’m at work now. HA

This is just part of a module for the Walthers contest. Basically the buildings are just the backdrop for the trains. I have a month to finish. The foam for the base is cut to shape and hopefully gets painted tonight. The long weekend will get a lot done I hope.
    Thanks!! 6084A1B3-D3C8-46D0-B649-76308A0EF50B.jpeg

Thanks for the comments Rob, Steve, Andre and all.
Excellent work there Bob, I always enjoy your updates.
Thats some great looking buildings Steve. I paid very little attention to buildings and the like on my outfit and it shows LOL.

Anyways another couple progress images for the latest drop deck flat. Got the transformer done. It is an older Kibri transformer I think. It had damage to the ends and bottom, I secured to my mill, and removed the ragged edges and rebuilt the ends and bottom.
Painted light gray, and used a few decals from many different Microscale sheets to give it a more complete look. Pretty much fills up the load deck.
    To the pics!

Thanks for stopping by. Take a little time to think about the reason for this Holiday weekend.

  18. Transformer looks good Tom. Nice project.

Funny you say that about the buildings. After a life of construction I don’t enjoy building structures at all. Much like railroading the construction world is not the same. It’s a works of political correctness, high pressure, the reward for hard work is more work. Not much fun anymore.

I'm kinda late to the party here, but

Bob - nice work on the new area. That's gonna look nice with grass

Steve - Amazing work on the buildings. Those look like they were plucked right out off the ground with a shrink ray

Tom - I really like that flat car. That's a a unique piece that would stand out on any layout.
