I found this slide up for auction on eBay. I couldn't come up with a location.

Any ideas where this is and if so what is the other railroad in the pic?

The info on the ebay site saids it is train 107 at nickals, mo in 1965. Thus, I would assume the other railroad to be also the Frisco

Appears to be Nichols Junction. The train is headed for the passenger main in downtown Springfield. It is coming from Ft. Scott, Ks. To the left would be toward Tulsa. The Wye goes toward the Springfield, freight yard. Nice photo.

I have worked their and been through there many times.
That is a pretty rare photo, don't think I have seen a photo of Nichols before. The diamond was gone, sometime in the late 60's or maybe early 70's. I seen the diamond laying to the side, removed.

During Aug 1965, The Sunnyland was not long for this world. That a very nice picture; note the chair buffet bringing-up the rear. Cavalcade was a personal favorite.

Anybody know what that is in the background, like silo's? I don't remember anything there. Like I said the diamond was long gone when I was there.

I don't care if Ansel Adams shot this photo, it's not worth $124.00.

The picture is mislabeled, it's #108 northbound at nichols. Heading from the downtown station,"northwesterly" by the compass.

I continue to be amazed at what price some of these slides and negatives bring (unless I list them). I have an idea who is bidding $139 for this and they will bid until they get it. It's a decent shot of a weedy area with a passenger train. I sold a slide last week taken at Hoxie, AR with a Frisco redbird at the MP crossing and a MP blue unit on a passenger train waiting to pull up to the depot. It sold for $94 which really surprised me. I saw a negative of the 4410 in passenger livery go for $110????? Does everyone else have the problem I'm having with these reply boxes? I can't hit return and have a new paragraph. Weird.

That is a nice shot, but $140? No thanks.

Why was the diamond removed? I didn't know it was.

Once passenger service was discontinued, the need to reach the depot from the Ash Grove Sub no longer existed, and the crossing was removed. Likewise on the south-side, the passenger line between the depot was severed between about Cherry St and WS Junction. This occurred about 1975 when the track was abandoned and the connection at WS Junction was removed.

Diamonds are a track man's worst friend. Although I don't know when it was removed, with no passenger trains, there is no need to go toward the downtown depot. Thinking, it came out like I said late 60's probably they upgraded the " Belt Lines" to get to downtown better. I do believe the train is Southbound though. It could have changed, but the, what I call "Wye" has been like that for many years, It goes to the Kansas Avenue yard. I agree though, its a little on the expensive side, I don't collect slides. I do have slides of when they built the "New Belt" though.

The pole line on the Ash Grove Sub at Nichols on the East Side (RR direction) of the track.

No such thing as diamonds on the railroad. They are Railroad Crossings at Grade. Just a little railroad terminology passing along. I remember the Train Master at Acca Yard who used to get so ¤¤¤¤ed off when the crews spoke of crossing the "Diamond" just up a ways on the RF&P at Doswell.

Karl, you must be saying then that the curved track to the right is toward Tulsa. That could be, most all that was gone when I was out there. I did not know there was a leg off the Tulsa line. Then the line toward Kansas Avenue is not shown.
At Grade Crossing is a Street Crossing, Diamonds are just called Rail Crossings.

Just looked also, I just happen to have a slide of the same area, the engine is back further. It is on a slide, wonder how I would post it.

The train is northbound, curved track at the right is the segment from the Tulsa line to the downtown depot, the afternoon sun is in the west-slightly by southwest is at the photographers back. The photographer is facing generally east. I've stood at this very spot many times and watched this very scene. Lots of times the trian was traveling at 50 or 60 MPH when it clattered across the diamond (Or "crossing") whatever term is "railroad correct." Neat "Pike Size" passenger train...

Can anyone provide the rough coordinates where this location is located on Google Earth? I'm having a bit of an issue placing this location in my brain.

    :p

Well, that's neat. A glimpse of something long gone. The area sure changed quick after passenger trains stopped. a few years later, most of that was gone. most everything changed.
