I believe that the "hammer" was made from a separator block, which is used to space the guard away from the running rail in a turnout....or something similar. The dimensions would be helpful.
Karl, I believe is correct. It is a "Filler Block" Racor is a maker of Track Material. The hole is where the bolt went through, and someone stuck a handle through it. The LF is probably Left Front. 17/8 is the hole diameter. The 119 is probably the size of rail. If so, 119 is a ATSF standard rail size.Just guessing on some of this, most of this stuff, is made specific for each railroad. I have put in many of these, but it's been a while. William Jackson
Attached is a drawing from the Frisco Standard Plans. The Separator Block used by the Frisco is slightly different than the Racor block that has been converted for use as a sledge hammer. Based on the Frisco drawing, the 1-7/8" dimension may refer to the depth or width of the flangeway.
Yep, right about the 1 7/8, course Frisco used to make their stuff at the Production Shop. Trying to rmember when that closed, maybe 76 or so. I was thinking they made the 115# material. Course they ordered from Abex, Racor and Pettibone also WHJ
