I would like to model the Meteor in N scale - do you suggest starting with heavy weight cars, then modifying the roof?

    Thanks,

    Jim

PS - Was Zephyr blue closer to Navy Blue or a lighter shade, such as a medium or royal blue?

Modeling Frisco heavy-weight passengers cars can be problematic. Most of the cars had “turtleback” or arched roofs. Conversely, it seems that most of the model equipment comes with clerestory or as the Frisco called them, monitor roofs.
I am uncertain what is available with regard to N-scale passenger equipment, but I suspect that you’ll have to scratch build a turtle back roof with styrene or take an arched roof from another car. At one time it was possible to buy basswood roofs in HO-Scale. I don’t know if these were ever produced in N-Scale.

    Streamlined Psgr Car Paint Scheme
Zephyr Blue: Body, steps, grab irons
Silver Gray(Very Light Gray or Off White): Center band and sash
Dove Gray: Trucks, roof, underbody equipment
    Black: Underframe and diaphrams
    Gold: Letters and Numbers

I think the Zephyr Blue scheme produced a handsome look. I was pleased when the SLSTA painted its support cars in that scheme for the 1522. I wonder what would have happened had the Frisco elected to keep that livery for its lightweight Meteor. Would the Frisco E units looked like the B&O?

I used Floquil C&O Enchantment Blue on my Firefly locomotive with good results. SP Lark Gray should do well for Dove Gray, and add just a touch of gray to Reefer White to get the Silver Gray.

Thank you for the information Karl - this is exactly what I was looking for. I am going to use the Model Power heavyweight passenger cars, and build a new roof. It won't be an exact match, but for my little n scale layout, it will be just fine.
One more question - the observation car - was it a typical open end, or was it closed (like the Firefly?)
    Thanks again

At this time, the only open-platform "observation" cars used by the Frisco were the Business Cars. Some of the 1500 Series Cafe Lounge cars had rear windows in the lounge.

    1501/1502 (Firefly) Blind End
    1503 Rear Windows
    1504 Rear Windows
    1505 Blind End
    1506 Blind End
    1507 Rear Windows

I have started a new thread in the heavy weight psgr car section, http://www.frisco.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=301 ,
and will try to get the car diagrams posted.

Now that Floquil is no longer available, what paint colors do you suggest?

When we painted 1522's support cars, we used a urethane two part paint which was called "Flag Blue" and the stripe was white. We used a light gray for the roof. I thought it looked pretty good when done.

When my daughter and I were chasing 1522 on May 19, 2001 I was so excited to see the locomotive running that I forgot to take photos of the rest of the train. Did get a couple of photos of the train from the top of a bridge but it only shows the top. lol.
