    Folks -
Several new photos of Frisco Steam on the "Fallen Flags" website:

    http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/new17-23feb.html

4-6-0 630, Ft. Smith AR: What is going on with the sand and steam dome? The steam dome almost looks white, and the the sand dome looks like one should find Sgt. Schultz's head underneath...

4-6-0 641, Mineral Wells TX: Note that the combine trailing appears to be one of the Frisco's wonderfully unique wooden, open-vestibuled cars with caboose cupola above the baggage section...

Richard Napper has shared his prior articles on modeling these cars:

4-6-0 687, Ft. Smith AR: Can't tell if that's corrugated tin over the engineer's window? Maybe to keep it from getting too hot in the sun while they're on break or lunch?

4-6-2 1021, Unk Date/Location: Nice photo of it taking on water. I'm also intrigued by the fact that it's apparently in freight service. Considering that it has the post-early 40s rebuild larger sand domes, and also appears to lack the gold fretwork on the cab, tender and sand dome, I'd guess the photo was c. 1948? Definitely Hungerford era, and maybe it had been bumped from first-class train service by the E7s and E8s?

The steam dome's sheet-metal "jacket" has been removed and placed atop the sand dome. The top of the actual steam dome can be opened, which allows access to the boiler and throttle valve, etc. The white stuff is the lagging.

The 687 is in the dead line, the main rod is off, and most likely, it will never never steam again.

Not only has the 1021 lost its gilding, but it has acquired a footboard pilot and dog house. It has definitely fallen from "grace"

Karl, thanks as always for filling in the blanks. Especially regarding the work on #630. Wherever the locomotive was spotted, it seems like an odd place out in the open to be removing the steam dome jacket. Any thoughts as to what type of maintenance/repairs would be done outside of the roundhouse?

I'm rather red faced at not even considering the dog house on the back of a Pacific as being incongruous.

The only sight sadder than a passenger locomotive relegated to freight-only duty and the accompanying cognate indignities is the sight of any steam locomotive in a dead line.

    Best Regards,

Most likely doing an interior boiler inspection or lapping the throttle valve on the 630. The dome lid is off.

Many of the 1015-series wound up in freight service towards the end, especially on the A&A Division and out of Enid. You see from the photo below (Don, if this came from you, apologies) of 1022 and 1030 in Fort Smith on their way to scrap that in addition to a doghouse they have been equipped with large headlights in the tender for use when operating tender-first in local service. I know 1030 was a regular around Fort Smith, so I suspect these two had come up from the A&A.

Gordon, that's a good, albeit poignant, photo. Anyone know the purpose of what appears to be a large chunk of wood on the doghouse of 1022?

    Best Regards,

Looks like it would be the box for fusees and flags for the brakeman.
