Bachmann has announced a large group of new items in all scales. I have chosen to post the link to their announcement so that you all can look at them and see how they relate to the Frisco. Having said that, a couple of offerings that I noticed were and HO scale S4 and a really neat 2-6-0 steam locomotive also in HO scale although it is an Alco design. Maybe some of you could at least use the drive train.

If anyone else finds anything else of interest to them, please post your thoughts.

I am disappointed in the 2-6-0. It looks horrible. Totally out of proportion. Maybe the final version will look better. Some have said that it simply was a redone IHC.

If Bachmann released the S4 in the color scheme of SLSF 298, the maroon and silver colors of the NEO, I would definately spring for it, though that probably won't happen. How many layouts could handle the Schnable Transformer car?

Hey, Manny! At least it is a "real" locomotive and not just another dismal.

Hey Sherrel! Yeah, it is a real locomotive. Just not one that can easily be converted to a Frisco. But I am already thinking! I'm curious if a Bachmann Baldwin 4-4-0 or 4-6-0 boiler can be retrofitted. I will try it. That will help out tremendously. Then I just need to change the valve gear to Cross instead of Laird. Hmmm....sounds like an interesting kit bash, doesn't it?

Regardless how nice all the models are on the market today in all scales, in the event I do return to model railroading I will only buy American, Canadian or Japanese products. The Mom & Pop manufactures do exist in the USA, Canada and Japan! Buying Chinese Junk only makes importers richer than they already are for unrealistically priced model trains. The lack of quality control is another matter that concerns me. Do you trust your trains in the mouths of your children? Remember the Mattel issue? Small children can still get daddy´s trains in his or her little hands and they usually end up in their little mouths!

Atlas, Athearn, Bachmann, Lionel and a score of other manufacturers put Americans out of work and on the street and moved production to China so they can stuff their greedy pockets full of our hard earned cash! Companies in the USA and Canada who proclaim that their products are produced at home with pride should still mean something even if it will deny you putting that shiney new diesel on your layout!

I mentioned Japan too. Kato has one of the highest ratings for model railroad products and they still pride themselves with quality control. It is a shame that Atlas and Stewart dropped the Kato drives in favor of cheaper products. It is up to each individual to make his or her own choice and it is your hard earned cash that you invest in an inferior product but remember, your job might get moved to Ying Yang next week too. Will you still have the cash to buy that shiney new diesel?

I repectfully request that this forum be used for edification regarding anything historical or about modeling the Frisco railroad.

There are plenty of outlets for political discussions and opinions, this forum is not the place.

The new Bachmann releases, including the S4, are not getting very good reviews from the "experts" on the "D List". Not a surprise.

Experts on the "D List?" What is and where can you find, the "D" list?

The "D List", i.e. Diesel List, is a very active web discussion group - many of the hobby's better known modelers are members. They often tend to be very critical - for example they have been trashing the new Atheran Genesis GP7/GP9 model quite a bit, and are having quite a time with the new Bachmann releases.

I monitor it but rarely comment. When I have commented, I often have gotten some crass replies from a few of the "experts". Who needs that? But, the list is a very good resource IMHO.

To join (free) send an e-mail to: diesels@gp30.com . Enter "subscribe" in the subject line (no quotes). It takes a few days to activate. You will then find 20-50 new e-mails coming your way from the list every day.

    Ken

ps - The D List is having a good discussion now about "Which is the best F7B model to buy?" Candidates are Athearn BB, Athearn Genesis, Intermountain, Stewart Kato, Proto 2000.

I sincerely apologise for any misconception that my post may have produced.

Ken´s statement regarding the poor review of the S4 does partly support my comments though.

Their GP7 doesn´t earn a cigar either from reviews that I have read.

I have contacted Frisco Mike and will eat crow if it will restore my good name!

The "D-List expert" complaints about the Bachmann S4 are really two in number - first, it is just a clone of the Atlas S2/S4 model in virtually all areas, and second, the cab is wrong in some details for a S4.

If it is as good as the Atlas, it's OK by me.

I've seen no comments on how good the Bachmann runs.
