I've been collecting stuff for a while now waiting to start building my layout so I figured that I should proly start weathering everything! Here's a few shots of the caboose and 2 covered hoppers I just did. No Frisco units (those are in the queue). I am open to all constructive criticism, tips, and thoughts. -Matt
Looks great! Try running a thin black wash down the ribs to make them pop out and paint the wheels. You've got those cars looking really good so far.
Matt, I think they look real nice. Does that powder stay on by itself or do you have to cover it with something? What are your plans for the faces of the wheels?
Bragdon says the powder will stay on as long as they are not handled frequently, but I went ahead and sprayed them with flat finish. I am still up in the air on how I am going to tackle the wheels, but the will get some treatment.
Here's a few more I knocked out tonight...still need to figure out the best way to tackle the shiny wheels though. Later in the week I'm going to take a stab at an SP unit I have. I figure if I screw it up I can just weather the living hell out of it and it will still be realistic! If that goes well I'll move onto some lighter colored power (Frisco & KCS). Matt
I pop my wheelsets out and brush paint the faces grimey black or rust or whatever color the prototype looks like.
One episode of "Cody's Office" on the Model Railroader website showed how he painted wheelsets using a microbrush: http://www.trains.com/mrr/default.aspx?c=a&id=3503 You have to be a member though. Rich
Here's my better weathering. If you've seen photo of my old layout, you'd see the terrible weathering I did last spring. But this gondola came out good, but my camera does no justice and it also was hard to get the right lighting, but any way here's a couple pictures. PS. I used NO powdered on this.
