My name is Roger Cannady, I was a member of FMIG more than 16 years ago when I had my HO layout, but had to re register today. I am starting to build an N guage layout, since I no longer have room for HO, and am looking for guidance in N scale. My grandfather and father worked for Frisco all their lives, and I worked in Springfield HQ during college summers. I grew up in Webster Groves, next to the double track mainline, just east of Edgar Road. I remember the F3's stopping in front or our house to cool the traction motors down during the long climb up out of Lindenwood Yard. I remember some of the oil burners passing the stationary F3's in front of our house. The Edgar Road bridge would disappear in the blast of black smoke and steam from the stack as the loco blasted underneath. I would like to build an N guage 1522 loco if anyone knows where I can find Frisco steam decals in N.
    Regards, Rog Cannady

    Rog -
Welcome back! Fascinating stories, especially the one of the oil-burners passing the F3s. I bet that provided some solace to the steam guys, but then again, as Mark Twain penned in Life on the Mississippi, "Still, it can be no sufficient compensation to a corpse, to know that the dynamite that laid him out was not of as good quality as it had been supposed to be."

Operationally-speaking, were the F3s the only units that would have to stop to let the traction motors cool down, or would this have occurred with later motive power, either F7s or second-generation diesels?

    Best Regards,

I know the name, a little history, would help. What did your family do? I was in the Track, Grandfather in the diesel shop. I played for the shop softball team. I live in Titusville, Fl.

    Chris...
The F3s were the ones that had to stop to cool down the motors. Eventually it stopped, I don't know why, but I suspect that more motive power was added so that the trains could get to Kirkwood before the temp/time limit expired on the traction motors. It was an uphill climb from Lindenwood to Kirkwood.

    Bill..
My grandfather was stationmaster at Monett, but he passed before I was born. My dad, Leon, worked in the Accounting Department (Asst Controller) for many years and retired just after the BN merger was completed. I worked in the Accounting Dept at Springfield during the summer of 64, 65, 66 when I was in college. We lived in St Louis from 1938 thru 1964 and then moved to Springfield with the relocation of the accounting department.

Ok, well that makes some since. My grandfather started in Monett, at the shop as a boilermaker. Their farm was out by Kings Prairie. Later they moved with the RR to springfield. I went out as a Asst. Roadmaster, prior to the BN merger, and most likely met your dad in the Springfield Office. I approved the Steel Gang's bills.

Rog, what are your main questions about N scale? You won't be the only one building in N. Charlie and Joe Lovett maintain a list of N equipment lettered for Frisco. I don't model steam era so wouldn't have the slightest about what to use for 1522. There should be some decals out there, some of us might have something that would get you started.

    Rog,

I am a Frisco N Scaler and devote a blog to it. Although I won't say that I am not a steam guy, I do not have any steam on my roster. I would like to have a steam locomotive (or 10).

My roster at http://nfrisco.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/roster11.xls (for future reference, that link changes every time I update it), does not show any steam but it does show what is out there. I know there was a steam locomotive manufactured in the 1990s (Bachmann?) but I have yet to find it. You might check Joe Lovett's roster.

I am not a decal guy since if I tried to put one on it would look like gum stuck under a seat, but you might start with this reference to search.

I am always looking for more Frisco N Scalers because the more people we can find, the more stuff we will get from the manufacturers.

Well Odballs had Frisco steam engine decals, but we all know where that went! You might have to improvise with some generic decals (For tender capacity data, stripes etc.) and "cut and paste" some numbers. HOWEVER, the white "FRISCO" letters in the standard black freight car "coonskin" is the same font as the lettering below the cab windows of steam engines. The cab lettering is just spread with more space between the letters. Rail Graphics has "generic" steam engine data and number decals.

Thanks Steve... I'm just getting started in N. I found a Frisco Atlas GP7 on Ebay and bought it, I have an undec Mountain engine that I would like to letter for Frisco, hence the need for a decal set for engine and tender.
