Neat little HM 4-4-0 on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hallmark-Models-Frisco-182-187-Class-4-4-0-/260984633704?_trksid=p4340.m185&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC.NPJS%26its%3DI%252BC%26itu%3DUA%26otn%3D5%26pmod%3D260983759091%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D7141499401505074354 Tom G. Edit: He originally listed it as N scale. Relisted as HO.
I almost bought one of these years ago at a train show... Wrong scale, but a nice model... And appropriate until the end of the steam era.... Paul
Don Wirth might weigh in and correct me, but it is my understanding that most of the Hallmark stuff looks pretty good but doesn't run worth a darn.
I tinkered with mine when I put a DCC decoder in it. Tweaked the pilot truck spring which was too strong and lifted the font of the engine and added as much weight over the drivers and inside the cab as I could. It runs like a champ now and pulls the little 3 car local passenger train around with ease. Biggest problem with the engine is cosmetic. The cylinders are only about 60% of the size they should be. I built new ones for mine and wasn't crazy about the tender so built a new body for my 184. The decals that Hallmark furnished with it are incorrect also. Not everyone is as much of a nitpicker as I am. I think the prototype engines were little dolls. A short line tourist road would be neat with the whole roster consisting of the 6 of them and some HW passenger coaches.
Don, why not write an article about this conversion for the Meteor, just wirte about what you did and give us some pictures t go along.
I guess I could write about it if I could remember. I did it over 20+ years ago. Right now, I'm working on another NP to Frisco 736 conversion and have been taking photos with submitting them in mind. I decided to sell my 728 that I did 30 years ago and do another one after doing the 739 for a friend. Otherwise, I don't have anything else in process right now.
