Does anyone know of any source that has produced the 'coonskin' numberplates for N scale steam engines? I tried an internet search, but it looks as if I may just have to breakout the small cutting tools and go to work on a sheet of brass. Any other suggestions? EM
I haven't yet tried this, but I've thought about scanning one from a larger scale, reducing it and printing it on photo paper. You could manipulate whatever numbers you wanted (Like it's really going to matter in N scale), then cut it out and attach it. Maybe if you had an actual color photo of a plate (Of 1522's for example), you could reduce the photo. Tom
Tom's suggestion is a good one. I have done this with small numberboards and also small number plates (for TRRA diesels) in HO scale, and it has worked well. Ken
Gold Medal Models has a set of etched metal steam locomotive detail parts which includes the Frisco coonskin number plates ( http://www.http://www.goldmm.com/nscale/gmnsloco.htm ). I have a set somewhere. The coonskins are nicely done. Paul
I ordered the Gold Medal Models steam details kit today. Once I have the decals and heralds in place, I'll post some pics of my first two attempts at modeling Frisco steam locomotives (a 2-8-0 and a 4-8-2)...thanks again for the suggestions all.
It's a hot summer day in southwest Missouri as this freshly painted locomotive steams around the bend into Everton, MO. Recently aquired from the D & E Railroad, this Baldwin Consolidation has just spent a few days at the Springfield shops getting some light maintenance and a new look. The ex-AT&SF, ex-D&E 2-8-0 joins the Frisco family as #1346. In reality, this Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0 got a coat of Boxcar red to the cab roof, a Gold Medal Models coonskin herald hung on the front, and Microscale decals to finish the look. Finally, some Testor's dullcoat finish was applied. Not only is this the first steam locomotive that I've tried to re-paint, but I recently got a new PC with Photoshop, and here is my first attempt to make a loco look 'alive'. I still have some work to do, the decals do not show well at all on the herald, in fact, they looked so bad I removed them until I can try something better. Thanks again to all for detailing suggestions. -EM |-|
Very nice! I can almost smell the smoke and feel the cinders as she steams by. Keep up the good work. Jim
