It saddens me to inform you that the 2012 convention, scheduled for September 21-23, 2012, has been cancelled due to lack of enteries to make it cost effective. If the group wants to try again during the spring please let me know. The door prizes should be stored untill our next convention. I want to say, Thank You to all of the Commitee members who helped with this project. This project would not have been possiable without you. Entry fees we did collect will be refunded this week.

    Thank You,
    Joe Lovett

I'm sorry to hear this. If I didn't live so far from the Midwest, I would be an attendee at every opportunity. Thanks for the effort that you have put into this Joe.

I think the spring time might be more convenient for people than the fall. It would be worth a shot to see if people would want to show up for it in the spring if the Tulsa crew (or if not them, someone else) would want to replan everything.
Personally I could probably make it with no friday night football, but with my luck there would be an ffa contest that weekend.

Just wondering (1) roughly how many attendees constitute critical mass to go ahead and hold the meeting, and (2) what percentage of our group does that constitute?

Two very good questions. To keep fee low, we need low cost meeting facilities which may or may not affect dates available, time of day they are open, etc. How does a committee anticipate attendance from a "group" that is not a formal association with a track record over several years? What other activities/groups can we work with? Does a host committee need to make a commitment?
I would like to propose some joint meetings with other historical if not modelling groups in the future. There might still be some commitment required; would we generate enough interest/provide enough content for that to work?

As an official representative (director) of the Missouri Pacific Historical Society, I would like to suggest the possibility of a joint meeting with that organization. There are many locations that were common to the Frisco and the Missouri Pacific. The MPHS generally averages 50 attendees at its annual convention. About the only thing that is set in stone is the date. The MPHS traditionally has its convention on the weekend that falls in with Columbus Day. This year it will be held on October 5 & 6 in North Little Rock, AR. I would be glad to bring it up at the next MPHS board meeting, if there is any interest from this group.

As a long-time member of MPHS, I very much agree with Charlie's suggestion. There is a lot of good-natured SLSF-MP banter here in StL, and it would be fun to get together for a joint meeting. I believe MPHS has done that successfully with other RR historical societies with good success (GM&O, RI, who was it?).

Our family reunion would interfere with 10/5 & 10/6 this year for me, however.

Another group to look at for a joint meeting would be the Katy Railroad Historical Society. The KRHS has it's meetings in the spring and usually picks locations a couple of years in advance. The spring 2013 meeting will be in Bartlesville, OK. With the Katy and the Frisco having several joint operations including the Texas Special and the Bluebonnett I think a joint meeting with this group would be very appropriate. They normally have around 50 people attend their meetings as well.

That's some really good ideas. Maybe something with the NMRA.
Mopac, Katy, The Rock, KCS, Frisco. A Midwest kinda thing.
It would take a really good program to draw people though.
That's a real issue, but I plan to wander up there sometime
in the next year. Coming from Florida, it needs to be something,
what about the Eureka Springs train, I might think that would be
    a good start.

The next time a poll is put up to see whether there's enough interest for a convention, it should be constructed so as to show who WILL be attending, and not cluttered with posts about who WON'T be attending. So the planners don't have to wade through a bunch of posts to get a head count.
