This caught my eye during a recent trip to the grocery store in Des Peres outside St. Louis. I brought home a six-pack to try.

Frisco 1501 Historic Lager is made by Public House Brewing Company of St. James, MO. They also have a brewpub in Rolla. Public House makes a point that 1501 on display in the park in Rolla is the inspiration for the name they chose. They probably distribute near Rolla and St. James, but also appear to be trying to distribute to areas with Rolla graduates (though I doubt they will get as far as Naples, FL).

The beer is a deep amber color with a pleasant grainy aroma and flavor. Hopping is subtle with just enough to give a clean finish. It was pretty good from a bottle, but it should be very fine from the tap at either of the establishments. Their website explains they used British ale ingredients, but fermented with a lager yeast at slightly higher temperature. This makes the beer a little heavier but with a little hint of fruit flavors.

Pretty cool! We plan to venture back to St Louis and Olathe around October. I'll definitely try to pick up at least a six-pack though I'm not a big beer consumer. Where is it on sale? Schnucks Des Peres?

Don't know the current statistics, but during my time at MSM in Rolla, the city of Rolla was in the top five in Missouri in beer consumption per capita. That was because of the Miners and the weekend warriors from Ft Wood, not the general Rolla public, I'm sure. I wish them success with Frisco 1501.

Brings back some memories - on a nice spring evening we would go up to Rolla lake park where 1501 sits and play catch, hit fungos, etc. After, in particular if a train was heard climbing up from Newburg, we would sit up by 1501 to take it in - along with opening a few cans of cold refreshment from one of the autos we rode over in.

It was from the Dierberg's a little bit east of Schnuck's. Schnuck's should have it, too; They have a good selection in their walk-in cooler!

A bit of a hybrid...not really a true ale and not really a true lager. It's interesting how yeast changes the flavor of a beer. beers-periodic-table_50290a5d22692.jpg
