I forget where I've seen the details (Maybe in an old ETT or a register??), but those 5000's series cars were off the register by 1951. I'll check some of my references and get back later. It might have been in Hawkins' and Wider's RPCYC?? I'll go have a look. Tom G.
On page 78 of "Railway Prototype Cyclopedia" (RPCYC) there's a photo of SLSF/GARE 5009. This is the caption: "St.Louis-San Francisco 5009 was one of 125 standard 53'-6" wood-sheathed express refrigerator cars from the 5001-5129 series built by Genreal American in December 1925 and leased from GARE by the railroad. SL-SF 5009 was equipped with 5' swinging doors, a heavy steel fish-belly underframe, collapsible hinged metal bulkheads, Miner Ideal Safety Hand Brakes (chain-type), GSC 8' wheelbase integral-journal high-speed trucks, Westinghouse LN air brakes, steam and signal lines, and passenger train buffers. Frisco's General American express refrigerator cars were returned to GARE by 1951." TG
