The title of the thread pretty much says it all (except it's "gray" in the U.S. and "grey" in the U.K., but I can't figure out how to edit thread titles). I want to use cork roadbed but ballast isn't brown... at least not here in the SE U.S. Does anyone know of any gray cork roadbed (or even just gray cork) for sale? - Brandon
I always paint mine after I glue it down. I used an earth color. Then I ballast after the track is in place. Just one way of doing things. I've never seen cork roadbed in any other color.
Brandon, on the layout that I built in our hobby shop back in the early eighties, I painted the cork roadbed gray with Krylon Automotive Primer since it was flat and readily available. To my knowledge, no one has produced gray cork. After the roadbed was painted, I then painted the rail with Rail Brown paint using an airbrush. The flat surfaces of the table top were then painted a dark tan, similar to the base color of soil in our area. Following that was the grass/ground cover.
Some at our club used the foam weather striping, like you get at a RV place, that is gray, but not cork. It did not work out well. The black stuff is out their, thinking it sticks down, not really a fan of that idea. The normal cork works very well, and according to several articles I have seen is the best help for the sound. I just applied full strength white glue to the sides or slope and the ballast covered the cork very well. Sprayed with the 50/50 glue and the track turned out nice. If the spray runs a little, it looks natural, kinda like side wash on the real railroad. Its not unusual to see some earth cropping out on the real thing.
A google search for "gray HO foam roadbed" led me here: http://toytrainsandrailroads.com/products/gray-roadbed-new Clicking on the picture or "more details" led me to ebay. An ebay search for HO Track Roadbed 1/4" Gray Sound Foam led me here: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odk...O+Track+Roadbed+1/4"+Gray+Sound+Foam&_sacat=0 Looks like it comes in 6' sections. Supposed to be more firm than the Woodland Scenics stuff... and it's gray, not black! - Brandon
