Could anyone point me in the right direction on where I might find information on where the RS-1s were assigned in the mid-1950s? Specifically, did any RS-1s serve on the Ft. Smith Subdivision during that timeframe?
Ethan, I think there is a photograph in Frisco in Color of an RS-1 in either Springdale, AR or Rogers, AR. I will have to double-check if others cannot confirm in the meantime. The photograph that Karl posted above of SLSF (AT&N) 110 is at Chaffee, MO. Ken McElreath observed many of the RS-1s operating out of Chaffee on the River Division in the 1950s. In fact, I have a black and white photograph of SLSF (AT&N) 111 outside of the Cape Girardeau one-stall engine house in 1962. I used to have the Chaffee Roundhouse Foreman's records from 1957, I think, that listed every engine assignment for every day of the year. They included instances of RS-1s double heading on the main as well as the branches, especially for MofW extras. I recall that at least seven RS-1s were assigned to Chaffee then. Unfortunately, I donated that record book to the Frisco Museum, so it is in a dark hole somewhere. Ken, I am glad you mentioned this. I have printed your February 1978 FMIG letter that mentions the foreman's book, and includes a single day's cross-section from March 9, 1961 with the following RS-1 assignments at Chaffee. I don't have the newsletter number handy, but will try to edit and add that sometime. Yard Switcher: 106 Work Extra South: 107, 110 Kennett Local No 851: 108 Ready Locomotives: 102, 103, 104 So, there are at least 7 RS-1 locomotives accounted here. However, SLSF 5 a 44-tonner is listed at the Chaffee Roundhouse undergoing inspection and maintenance. So I wonder if another RS-1 would have been filling in for it? Attached is a newly-acquired photograph from Ken McElreath of SLSF 111, Alco RS-1 at Cape Girardeau. He mentioned it in post #5 where he states that SLSF 111 is in front of the single-stall engine shed that was still in Cape in 1963. Thanks for the photo, Ken.
That is nothing short of delicious. Keith/Ken, I don't have my maps handy. Was the engine house just south of the "old bridge" near the present-day Missouri Barge Lines facility? I recall seeing early 1900s maps of an old turntable in that vicinity. While I do like my Frisco steam power, the RS-1s are probably my FFD (Favorite Frisco Diesels). Best Regards,
Chris, The engine house was west, across the tracks from the Missouri Drydock, with the switch lead near the "SHOPS" station sign on the mainline. It was nestled close to the cement unloading facility. Ken McElreath

I am new to this thread. I am researching former AT&N equipment. Any information about the build dates and original paint schemes of AT&N/Frisco 101-111 is greatly appreciated. I am considering looking for a used HO scale, DC, AT&N RS-1 or trying to purchase one in any other road name and repaint it in it's original AT&N paint scheme, whatever that was. According to Wikipedia, RS-1s were built from 1941-1960. The Frisco purchased the AT&N in 1948. 1) When were 101-111 built? 2) If 101-111 were built and AT&N-owned prior to the the Frisco's purchase of the AT&N in 1948, what did their original AT&N paint scheme look like?

Thanks so much. That information is greatly appreciated. That answers my question as to when they were built, 1944-46. Which means they were built before the Frisco bought the AT&N in 1948. From that I assume that it is possible that 101-111 had an exclusively AT&N paint scheme before their familiar black and yellow Frisco scheme with AT&N sub-lettering. Does anyone know what the original paint scheme was on the AT&N Alco RS-1s from 1944 until the Frisco bought the AT&N in 1948?

The RS-1s were regular power on the Leachville Subdivision from at least the early 1950s until the end of service. Sometimes they were double headed.
Thanks for the insight Jim. It is good to have information on what motive power was predominant on the River Division subdivisions and branches in the first-generation diesel days. Louis Marre's Frisco's Diesel Power has a shot of SLSF (AT&N) 111 switching in Springdale, AR. So it is conceivable it worked the whole subdivision. Larry F.
