Hi I have been interested in model railroading all my life, but until now have not had the opportunity. I was searching for modeling ideas and came across the Alabama, Tennessee and Northern (AT&N) and its relation to the Frisco. I was born in Mobile, AL. My wife's grandfather and greatfather both worked for the Frisco in and around Chaffee, MO, and I thought this may be a great way to get started - merging history and families. At present I don't have a layout or any equipment or supplies, so I am starting from scratch. I would like to concentrate on the steam era probably 1900-1940. Jim Dixon numbersmgr@yahoo.com
Welcome, Jim. You will have no trouble getting Frisco equiptment for this period. Just watch ebay as there are several items listed there. Obviously some are more accurate than others, but if you are happy, then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Good luck on your search for Frisco equiptment, Terry
Jim - Welcome to frisco.org. If you wanted to consider a little later time era, the Atlas Alco RS1's are a fine model, and the two they did for the Frisco, SLSF 101 & 111, show the AT&N lettering below the road number on the cab sides. Ken
Thank you for the info. It looks like I will need to learn ebay too. That is good - it we are not learning new things we will become extinct.
Thank you for the welcome and the heads-up. I have been thinking about some sort of river or sea port switching layout, so those would work well.
Forget what the dieselmonger said about the RS-1s. Hunt up some PFM Frisco Russian Decapods and have a ball. Diesels are evil contraptions and will attract rodents.
Thanks guys for all the input. I am afraid that space limitations will force me to keep things small - small locos and cars and short trains. My preference is for small steam (Moguls Ten-Wheelers and Consolidations) and the ATN and Frisco used some of each. The RS-1 would help solve the size problem; it's just too bad that diesel's don't sound like real trains.
Welcome aboard Jim! You might consider adding a Tsunami to that RS1 and maybe your mind would be swayed a little.
Don't listen to them Jim, that's how they get their foot in the door. Stick with your 2-8-0, 2-10-0 and 4-6-0 plans.
I think that I saw one of the evil blue and white rodent contraptions lurking about in one of the yard shots of Don's layout! Quick! Get the bug spray!
