Thanks Ken It is nice to all those RR's that are long gone now, that era is interesting. You about see most anything. Tom Holley
I'll jump in here, Tom, to say I can't identify some of those fast-moving folks, but you were favored with a good look in Part 1 at the greatly respected General Superintendent, Mr. McClelland, who was also apparently filling in as Chief Flycatcher that session.
Re: Glacier Park Models Frisco 4500 ""you were favored with a good look in Part 1 at the greatly respected General Superintendent, Mr. McClelland, who was also apparently filling in as Chief Flycatcher that session."" AAHH!! indeed the General Manager/ Superintendent/ Road Foreman/ Train Master/ Crew Caller, ie. "the man"Looks like a world class outfit to me The track and design, look like a smooth operation to me, and that is not easy, nor does it come by mistake. Thanks, |-|Tom Holley|-|
Let's get his title absolutely correct; Rick McClellan is the Northern Division Superintendent, St. Louis - San Francisco Railway. He also trains new engineers, conductors, dispatchers, yardmasters, roadmasters, and other railroad flunkies. His benchwork building and tracklaying methods are simple and very reliable, as the operators will attest. We gotta get you to KC, Tom.
I am trying to set it up, like maybe next summer. It would be great to actually meet some of you guys. The thing is, I need to plan for so much more than an OP session. Like I would need a couple days with Ken Wulfert just to discuss the whole Scotch thing. And if I survive that there is the whole KC bunch to deal with, I mean, you guys can be pretty tough. Tom Holley
I've been privileged to operate both on Tom's layout (when I lived out in "Junction") as well as Rick's layout. Both of 'em are awesome! Tom, are you still doing the flywheel truing/Ernst gearing of the Athearn blue-box engines that seemed to be the trend amongst the club members out here? Incindentally, there are 3 ways to get to Grand Junction: Drive thru Debeque Canyon on I-70, fly a puddle-jumper from DIA to Walker Field, or (best of all) take the California Zephyr. IMO, choice # 3 would be the best.
Thanks Bob But its been too long since you seen the outfit. There is allot more Frisco now than then. Yep still doing the motor truing, Ernst thing. I am sure there are well over 400 engines done that way around here, they are predominately what runs out here between myself Matt Darling his dad Wayne, Brian Morris, Woody and Buster to name a few. I have a double pole, double throw switch, so yous guys can bring you DCC power supplies and stuff to run too. You are welcome anytime just let me know if you get out this way. Yes Sir Ken- Sounds like a plan to me maybe turn a wheel or two as well.|-| Tom Holley
Ran trains yesterday on the N&F RR... we did a couple of fun runs with double-headed steam, a first on the NFRR. It's just a seven car train, but with little 4-4-0's running up a 3.5% grade, it's a pretty good load. I think we might be able to pull a couple more cars if I can get them built. Anyway, try to guess which locomotive is burning propane and which one is burning "clean coal"... EDIT: Sometimes the embedded videos appear "jerky" on my computer, if you have that problem just watch the video on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtlpUcMFspk
James, I LIKE IT! The "coaler" is obvious. I had fun when we ran last time I was down. Looking forward to another trip, especially with the introduction of new equipment.
Re: Glacier Park Models Frisco 4500 Great stuff James!! Love those live steamers, thanks for sharing with us. Tom Holley
Re: Glacier Park Models Frisco 4500 James - Thanks, neat. Looks like fun! I notice you have also developed a canine railfan. Just proves again how wide the appeal of the Frisco is! Ken
I have been asked to do a layout tour, I apologize in advance for the lousy camera operation, did it in 2 vids. And a GP7 (Hand over heart) vid as well. a couple might be a bit shaky till the anti shaking editing gets finished Thanks, Tom Holley|-||-| hyperlinks below Layout tour #1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWamcty-tVY&feature=channel&list=UL Layout tour #2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWpjosriIvI&feature=channel&list=UL Frisco/ QA&P GP7's on a Eastbound drag http://youtu.be/YYCFxLE1Zz0
Wow I don't know what kind of anti shaking program youtube is using but boy when you see the video. they way the lines curve and stuff changes shape. I might delete those vids and try again. Ethan, can I change them back? Tom Holley
coil steel train Here we have a unit coil steel train. 7 powered units, 50 cars. I guess I still dont have the embedding thing down. I'll tell you. I guess I just dont know what I am doing with that. I wonder if it could be the settings on my newer laptop. Built this train between 1995-1997 with Walthers coil cars and a couple MDC flat bottoms. Each coil was made from the heaviest walled pipe I could find in the size needed. Had a fellow part the pipe in 7/8" increments I then chucked it up in a lathe ran the tool across the roll very quick to try and simulate the layers of the roll. I then painted them all and wrapped them with drafting tape for the banding. There is 15' of pipe on this train. it weighs over 50 lbs. And on that 2 1/2 grade it is a real pull, and was the end of my use of plastic drawbars and couplers. This could be a repaint project one day. Thanks for looking. I decided I would contribute a short video to this thread. Took 7 attempts to get this shot because theres one spot that two of the cars love to derail on. It did derail and come uncoupled just off camera but I was about fed up so I caught it up and recoupled it. Power was provided by a Frisco SD45, a MoPac U30C (sound unit) and a Frisco GP40-2. So here it is, an extra intermodel train running down the Iantha Branch.
Ethan - Even though my heart's with steam, I do like the SD-45s. Nice class lights, Gyralite and beacon! Best Regards,
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have been 100% unable to view any videos on this site for the last couple of weeks. If I click on the video, I hear the sounds, but no video. I can go to the Youtube link and can view them there. Just now I tried to view Ethan's video, couldn't, went back to Tom's coil train, couldn't, went to Youtube, saw it, came back, and in the middle of Ethan's screen were four pictures, not railroad related at all that I could click on and view, didn't. Can anyone give me a clue what has happened because I used to be able to view all videos posted here. It seems like this happened around the time the imbedded discussion started. May not have been, just seems that way. Thanks for any help. Terry
