Hi All: Plans are to be leaving Friday after work to making a "texture trip" through Missouri to photograph suitable structures for use in my modeling. I will be using US 71 through Missouri. Are there any towns with refurbished business districts of reknown along the way? What about Carthage? Thanks for any input. Andre Ming
Andre, Neosho has downtown close to tracks, although not much left of the many businesses that once had service. You can tell how a spur ran behind some of the buildings. Carthage has a very busy downtown. The railroads are down the hill with some significant structures scattered about. I've not been all the way into downtown Lamar, not sure how the MP relates to it, but Frisco angles across the edge of town away from it. Nevada has some interesting structures near the tracks, plus overpass. Not been downtown in Belton for a few years, but it surrounds the Smokey Hill Museum which occupies the old Frisco main. If you've got maps, one can wander around Joplin quite a bit, but downtown has pretty well turned its back on the old Union Station area. If you haven't been in Rogers, AR, it would be another choice for spruced up downtown and remains of older rail-served businesses. But maybe you're familiar with everything railside there, from the cab perspective?
From the cab perpective not a priority at all. Mainly, I need: * Ornate architecture. * Brick/Stone buildings. * Etc. I will be using the textures for lots of things: * Creating ornate late-19th century structures. * Creating mid-20th century "Main Street" types of buildings. * Creating "back street" industries, all sizes. Like building blocks, I simply need parts such as: * Blank brick, rock, etc walls. Larger the better. * Varieties of dock doors, docks, and such. * Windows, entryways, and so forth. Heading out this afternoon with KC and the West Bottoms and other areas as the Saturday target. Sunday will be spent hitting the smaller towns along 71 hiway as we head home. Thanks for your input. Andre
Andre: Make a trip to Van Buren, AR. and stroll down that business district. Rogers and Fayetteville also have some interesting buildings.
Yup... I've nailed Fort Smith and Van Buren in the past. Always searching for more. Welp... off to KC!!! Andre
Just got back from Carthage yesterday. I spent three days there taking photos and doing research. It was definitely worth it! I also drove 71 down and back. I know this area well - I grew up in Carthage!
Hi railroadpete: Wife and I took a quick swing through a small portion of Carthage on our way back home this past Sunday... looks like there is a lot of photographic potential there! As for the West Bottoms/KC in general: I shot what I could. Didn't bring home as many photos as I hoped, but still better than nothing. Amazing how many obstacles exist when trying to shoot structures for texture use. Most aggrevating is seeing a simply gorgeous structure... and you can't get square-on enough for a texture photo, so it is essentially unusable. MANY such structures in the KC MO area suffered from this malady. Andre
Andre .. laughed when I read your post, but I lament with you as well. Ever notice how many locomotive shots have trees, poles, and other structures sticking out the top? It's flustrating to say the least.
