Frisco 42' Fishbelly Flat Car KITS

    Howdy,

Good news, we just received an email from Red Caboose stating the kits arrived at Intermountain today. They'll go in the mail tomorrow, so we should have them, soon. I'll let folks know when the kits arrive.

We'll also have numbering decals available for the kits and renumbers of RTR cars. The decals will provide endless possibilities for numbering. They have distinct numbers for 12 cars, ten 0-9 number sets, and new build dates.

    Best,
    mike

Wow! I wonder how many people have noticed those beauties are on dual-gauge track? For those of you that have never seen the Texas Western Club layout I can attest that it is really beautiful. That yard the cars are sitting in is worth a visit on its own.

Mike, are the wood decks in yet?

I need two for the cars I bought at the Plano show.

I put the LASERkit decks on my 42' yellow flats and they really look great. I had done the same earlier on my red oxide 42' flats. Only problem is that the wood decking is just a smidge wider than the plastic deck on the car. From a normal viewing distance this is not a problem.

Be very careful to line the deck up square at one end of the car before you start laying it down. No going back for adjustment once the deck is on there!

    Ken

ps: "smidge" = a very sophisticated form of distance measurement; works equally well with either metric or english systems.

    Howdy folks,

The wood decks are in and available at http://shop.twmrc.org. We are still waiting for the kits, but the main stock of RTR arrived last week. We had about sold out of the first shipment.

    Best regards,
    mike

Those wood decks are fantastic. I bought sixteen of them earlier when I bought my two cars, and have installed all but two on all of my RS flats. Ken, is absolutely right about lining up one end before pressing into place. I also found a useful technique after lining up one end was to very lightly press down one side of the deck along one side of the car and not press down hard until satisfied. I found I was able to do some adjustments that way if necesssary. They add so much to the looks of the car even though the deck is now a little thick. If I see someone inspecting the decks too closely where they might notice that, I just bop them on the head and they forget all about the car:eek:. I appreciate the opportunity to buy both the cars and the decks. Terry

Defining "smidge" and sharing the process of "calibrating deck inspectors", all in the same thread... priceless... :p

    Howdy,

The wood decks are not quite the same color as the factory painted deck, so after applying the wooden decks, I went down the edge with a dark wood colored marker, touching both the wood and painted plastic. The effect works well when viewed from a foot or so.

    Happy rails,
    mike

Looks to me as if the wood deck overlay planks are just a "smidge" wider than the car deck planks, or, the car deck planks may be just a "smidge" narrower than the wood deck overlay?

But it do look nice. :)

    Same "smidge' either way!

I measured the decks with a micrometer and they are dead on. The trick is placement, so they perfectly match on each side. Best, mike

Mike - I've put on four LASERkit 42' wood decks of the six I have (all bought about 6-7 years ago), and each was a "smidge" wider than the Red Caboose plastic deck under it - on both sides when perfectly centered. Perhaps over the years they have tightened the tolerance a bit. None-the-less, it is not noticeable. Not a problem.

    Howdy Ken,

Thanks for the note. The decks we are selling at the Texas Western are from BTS instead of Laserkit. We thought they were going to be Laserkit, but turned out to be BTS, hence the lower price. They look a bit different and are very nice.

    Best,
