4-8-4 SLSF 4501 Here are several shots of 4-8-4 SLSF 4501 at the Age of Steam Museum, Dallas, TX. My photographs. Taken
Hello Frisco Folks Here are some pictures of Frisco 4-8-4 Northerns SLSF 4500, 4501, 4502, & 4503 Enjoy, Rich Ship it on the Frisco!
Very nice detail pictures of the engine. I hope she and all of her friends at the Age of Steam Museum or Museum of the American Railroad now have a good move to Frisco, TX.
The Museum of the American Railroad website is reporting that 4-8-4 SLSF 4501 should move from the Fair Park grounds in Dallas, TX to the new museum grounds in Frisco, TX on May 18, 2013 given no further obstacles. The move should only take a day. The museum also states that the "Meteor" graphics should be applied by the time of the move. http://www.museumoftheamericanrailroad.org/Frisco/TheBigMoveRollingStock.aspx
That will be nice to see. A Frisco 4-8-4 on the road again, even if it is being towed, with "Meteor" on the tender sides. Steve
Not sure if the SLSF 4501 has the "Meteor" logo unless it has been repainted recently. I saw it at Dallas, TX in the 1980s and it was just black with tender numerals. However, the SLSF 4500 at Tulsa, OK is done up in fine fashion in the blue Meteor scheme. Tom G. Edit: I just looked at some photos from the museum at Frisco, TX, and it does look like SLSF 4501 has had a partial new paint job! Although it is hard to see in the pictures.
Tom, I believe it was panted in the blue and white scheme, without the "Meteor" logo sometime in the last 4 years. With that said, the last time I saw SLSF 4501 it was black. Steve
Well, the move was put off today because of "high freight volume" and will be rescheduled. I have attached a picture of 4501 ready to hit the rails. The move will take her in front of Dallas Union Station. Trivia question - When was the last time that a Frisco steamer sat in from of the Dallas Union Station?
I just had a call from Scott Lindsay who was in the engineer's seat of the 4-8-4 SLSF 4501 at 10 MPH headed to Frisco, TX. He said they were about halfway and have had no problems. He handled the job of getting her ready for the move. I think all the lettering, etc. is finished too.
Would it be great to see a fantasy double-header with 4-8-4 SLSF 4500 and SLSF 4501 heading down the line? Tom
Gordon, Here is one more picture of 4-8-4 SLSF 4501 before they backed her out of Fair Park in Dallas, TX. If 4-8-4 SLSF 4500 and SLSF 4501 were just side-by-side it would be a sight! To quote the museum "4501 arrived in Frisco, TX at 11:00 pm and performed flawlessly. Our thanks to everyone at DGNO and BNSF Railway for an outstanding job". I took a few videos of the move. From Richard Crabtree on Frisco Rails Across Missouri. Here we see Frisco No. 4501 built for the Frisco by Baldwin Locomotive Works and delivered to the Frisco in November of 1942. The 4-8-4 Northern Class Locomotives were designed to eliminate double heading 4-8-2 Mountain Class locomotives on the passenger run from St Louis, MO to Springfield, MO then on to Tulsa, OK and Oklahoma City, OK. Numbers SLSF 4500, 4501 and 4502 received this beautiful blue paint job with Meteor, all in red, the name of the train it pulled. She was and is quite the site. Two of these grand ladies of the Frisco Lines still survive. No. SLSF 4500 is in West Tulsa, Oklahoma at the Route 66 Village.
