Passenger traffic between Greenfield and Aurora never warranted a passenger train (except for the Bull Mooses that ping-ponged between Greenfield and South Greenfield). Between South Greenfield and Aurora, a caboose-combine that handled the few passengers, express and sealed mail, and the rear-end crew was sufficient. Since I have been "working at home" for the past two week, I have been able to work and model from the same desk. I started work on G&N Rwy number 101. It's a bash from several kits and on hand parts... Thus far: I have completed the underframe details... brake system and links, truss rods and turn buckles I have fabricated a new cupola I have started on the interior...built Grandt Line seats and stoves and am building interior walls. This is the interior plan and side elevation. Ten seats are more than enough for the Aurora Branch. This is a dry fit of the underframe, roof and cupola. The brake system and truss rods are in place. I will add the baggage door steps once the underframe has been glued in place. The partitions for the men's and women's toilets are complete. They need to be painted before they are glued to the wooden floor.
Thanks, Gents. I am unsure how I will paint and letter it. I have been looking at the MSU’s digital copy of an early painting diagram book. I intend to use it for the interior colors. To be sure, the effort is inspired by the Hoxie Sub Coach-Cabooses, but the Frisco had other, older versions of this type of car. There was a similar scratch-built brass similar car on eBay maybe a year ago, combo coach combine caboose. It had been built by someone on this forum. But while it was truss rodded , it had steel sides. Not the same prototype at a different time period, right?
The Coach-Caboose model you are referring to was #844 and was kit-bashed styrene by Tom Teeples here in KC for Larry Fey, using information provided by Richard Napper's article and other information available on this web site. http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/car-844.8913/#post-61611 Pictures of the model are on this post: http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/car-844.8913/#post-82753 Please continue any further discussion about 844 on that thread so we don't dilute Karl's thread.
Really, really nice looking project, Karl. Pretty inspiring for anyone looking to construct a manageable, prototypical passenger consist. Offhand, do you know when the prototype was retired/scrapped?
Karl , that is really neat. It is a great floor plan inside as the view of it on the outside! I wonder if some other branches, similar to the Salem in 190o's, ever used those?
To be sure, this is a fantasy piece based on a Roundhouse 50-foot, wood combine. Of course, the inspiration for the model comes from the Frisco’s coach-baggage-cabooses 844 and 845, which were used on the Hoxie Sub. There are several threads about these cabooses. Other flavors of coach-cabooses exist...Stagner book has a pic of one on page 14. The FEM has a poor picture of another on the A-A Sub.
Glad this one received a bump. I’ve always wanted to model #844; Richard snapper sent me his “Caboose Kibitzer” article ages ago. Time to get after it
