    Hi Y'all,

I have a question that I'd like to throw at you. Please keep in mind that I am the only one in my home, along with Roosevelt, my Great Dane, so I have no one to answer to but me.

As you know, I did a plan for the SABRR with great help from all of you. I am very pleased with it. My master bedroom is the only room in the house large enough to accommodate it and then some with ease.

The other room now designated for the trains is 15x10, whereas the master is 26x17.

Do I move my bedroom into the 15x10, and make the master my train room? It would mean that I need to walk into the master to use the shower and what not, but that doesn't seem to be a big deal to me.

So who says use the master and who says use the spare bedroom?

Please do not hesitate to answer candidly.

    Thanks!

    Manny

What does Roosevelt say? :D Will he be OK with the scaled down living arrangements?

You can cram a lot of railroading into a 10x15 space, but, seems to me that your posts would indicate that you will have lots of locos and rolling stock - which - combined with work space, would require a larger area.

    I love choice #3. :D

What is keeping you from using all of the 15x10 space and some of the 26x17 space? Staging tracks do not take up much room along a wall and a small hole is no big deal in a sheet rock wall. You can do a lot by fully using the 15x10 and getting the staging out of that room.

The two rooms are separated by two bathrooms back to back. No tracks can go through the walls. Now there is another empty bedroom next to the 15x10 and all I would need to do is go through an empty closet.

An idea I have had in my mind for a while, you don't have to use this I'm just throwing it out there, is take two rooms (in this case your current room and the room next to it) and have a layout set up in both and connect them through the wall. Then have a double main that loops around the entire layout. Have a yard in both room to handle inbound and out bound traffic. And for each industry you have have an input industry and an output to match it (ie a grain elevator and a flour mill, or a coal mine and a steel mill). And maybe for your case have a couple staging tracks in the closet. Just throwing this out there.

I am considering doing a through the wall into the spare bedroom. That might make things very interesting. I'll have to take a measurement of the other room and I'll let you know...

I thought we more or less settled the issue of layout design some time ago, and that it was predicated on the available space you had. Seems to me if you were to start punching holes in walls it would require a potentially major re-design, putting you back to square one. Speaking strictly for myself, I am not wild about the idea of punching holes in walls, even if it is drywall, to accommodate a model railroad. A railroad built in a 26x17 space should keep you busy for quite a while just as it is (but then it's not my house).

Well, you are correct that I was settled on a layout design. However, I rented a different house and so the room designations have changed. So I need to make some adjustments. To me its no big deal. The main issue with the walls isn't too big of a problem for me. The thing I am concerned about is that the door ways between the two room are not adjacent so it will take time to go from one to the other. I'm not saying that that is a problem, but if a derailment occurs, I may not be able to catch it before damage strikes.

Manny, it is possible to use the second room with minimal impairment of its use, if you need a guest room. I have a friend in Garland who has a two room plan. He has kept the operations low-key, but he can entertain a couple of visitors for an evening. Room #2 is hardly influenced, unless someone was planning on a long stay. His continuous run does involve using a folding section that is very well engineered. Creates a duckunder, but is only up for a portion of an operating session. As always, the scribblers among us await the chance to dull our #2's in pursuit of your always changing goal.

It's just me and Roosevelt in the house. I don't have guests over for night time stays so the room is just empty. No furniture. It can be used without issue. I'm still thinking about what I want to do. If I use the two bedrooms I can make a dogbone style layout with island for sidings and small branch lines to service industries. The verdict is still out. I had another painful bout with Kidney Stones and just got out of the hospital again. They found 6 more stones and I have a very bad UTI, so I'm not doing much of anything. I kinda feel so worthless right now and am really down on everything. Sorry, just had to say it.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

Thank you. I really appreciate you and everyone who has had a thought in mind for me. It's bad enough that I suffer with severe depression to begin with. This makes it so much worse. Urinating brings me to tears and takes my breath away, it hurts that bad. I picked up some tools today at Hobbytown, so I'm going to do a little work on the boiler for #76. Turns out 76 had 48" drivers and I found them. I know they are only 2" scale smaller than the Mantua drivers but the difference should be enough to get brake shoes in between the drivers.

Thanks again everyone. This ordeal has to end soon. I hope.

Since this is a rental house, I would use the master bedroom. Landlords typically frown on punching holes through walls.
