Peabody's Catale Tipple facilities Unit Train leaving the Tipple Construction of this nine-mile spur to serve Peabody Coal Company's new mine near Catale, OK was started in early 1968.and completed in December. The first unit coal train from this mine was in January of 1969. The coal moved North to Kansas City Power and Light Company, Kansas City, Missouri. By the early 1980s business on this line was minimal due to the high sulfur content of the coal and the availability of low sulfur coal from the Powder River Basin. Peabody's Catale Tipple facilities
Derailment - Beaumont Sub North of Winfield, KS Beaumont Sub. North of Winfield,KS, Spring 1969. We worked all night building a shoo fly around the derailment. It is early morning and Train #631, our first train, is ready to test the track. I call this picture "Creeping around the Shoo Fly"
Ok, Who knows Pittsburg Kansas??? I found what looks like to be an abandon rail yard /Engine House in the NW part of Pittsburg. It is quite large and the tracks run through the building in 10-15 different locations. I found a sanding location, one or possibly two turntables, remains of a water tower, and many other yard equipments. I have included several photos and will get more the next time I am through. PS I did see a BNSF coal train down the track near there, so I think this could have been a Frisco or KCS Yard??? UPDATE - I have confirmed, that this is the the KCS yard that were abonded in the 1960 - I have found a picture of the Frisco yards - not even close. Take care, Rich Ship it on the Frisco!
The Frisco did not have a turntable in Pittsburg, KS....at least not since 1923. Power was turned on a wye.
