Frisco 1053 is leading train 704 up the hill to Compton, and is rounding the 5 degree - 54 minute curve near MP480.6. The lone chair car is one of the Jim Crow cars.

That's some beautiful and hilly country. During college (probably 1974ish) a friend and I raced a bicycle race from Talahina, OK, to Mena, AR, up scenic highway 1. Railroading that area must have been some feat back in the days of steam.

The photograph caption was captured from the Oklahoma Historical Society web site, "View a full description of this postcard" link.

Northbound should be an even numbered train.

A review of the Central Division, Supplement C to Employee Time Table No 35, Effective Sunday, September 28, 1947 for the Arthur Subdivision indicates the northbound train number should be No 710, the St. Louis Limited.

This is the closest time table date in this forum's timetable section to the noted photograph date.

Is a more current timetable to the noted photograph date available?

Is there another source for information available to verify the accuracy of the noted photograph date?

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!

Please see the Terminal Railroad Association of St Louis Historical and Technical Society, Inc. Summer 2015, Issue 75, pages 105, 132, and 155. With an excerpt from the 1948 PTT on page 132 and with the dates found in the “cars assignments” on page 155, we can see that the northbound train carried number 704. The OHS caption, which contains the 407 would also seem to be a typo. It is a red flag, since no Central Division train carried a 4xx number.

One of the great things about this site and its primary strength is folks willing to contribute and share information.

Karl has helped to confirm the referenced photograph location and date.

The curve noted was between Compton, OK, MP 478.9, and Talihina, OK, MP 483.6, on the Arthur Subdivision.

Hopefully someone can post a time table closer to the referenced photograph date.

The 1947 timetable only shows two regular scheduled passenger trains on the Arthur, or Ft. Smith, Subdivisions, No 703 and No 710.

    Please see the following link.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks!
