    So I presume the numbers below 28, 33, 39, 40 and etc.
    are Locomotive Numbers or ?

    No, that is the amount of TONS each class of engine can handle up the grade. No engine numbers involved.

    SO... a Class 28 engine between Monett and Purdy should be good for 850 tons.

    The tonnage class number refers to the locomotive’s TE in thousands of pounds in round numbers… e.g., a 28 class locomotive will produce 28,000 +\- lbs of tractive effort
