I received a cell call tonight from my two granddaughters, Addison and Lauren, who told me they saw a big steam engine heading out of KC along I-35 as they were heading in to their day care school this morning. Their mom, Jennifer (our daughter-in-law), told me as they were heading in to KC on I-35, the tracks were on the left, and the steam engine was heading in the opposite direction. I assume that was on the ex-Frisco BNSF? Anybody know what steam engine was operating in KC this morning around 7:30? Thanks. Ken
Thanks Bobs! I sent the word on to the kids in Olathe, along with a pic of UP 844. I remember 844 in StL during the 1990 NRHS here. I have a VHS tape of it somewhere in my "stacks" that my friend the late Ed Heiss took. That was a fun convention - we had UP 844, SLSF 1522, SSW 819 and N&W Class A 1218(?) here. Wow! That was an assembly of some stud-horse locomotives. Ken
Running a steam engine over a mainline track these days is a BIG DEAL. I remember when the UP ran their Challenger thru here, it was very spectacular. The thing that was the most concern to me, is the folks that wanted to stand way to close, or even on the tracks that concerned me the most. There is nothing like seeing a Steam Engine actually pull something, the sound from the stack is mesmerising, if not spectacular. What I remember is the steam engines set all the hot box detectors off everywhere they went. Tom Holley
I live in Tulsa and we went down to Wagner and ten to Muskogee and got a few pictures of the up844 They were running late and didn't stay in Muskogee the full 30 minutes. Carl
