I can't tell from b/w photos but could someone enlighten me on the roof colors of the 4100s? If red, were they delivered as such or did the shops apply the color? Thank you. Larry F.
generally speaking, I think the cab roofs were red in color, I have a painting diagram some place that stated the cab roof was painted red.
I think it was a regional thing. I think a lot of the Oklahoma engines had red cab roofs. Most of the 4100s had black roofs.
As an addendum to my question on roof colors, were the 4100 tenders equipped with coal pushers? Thanks. Larry
Larry, The locomotive diagram book posted below... http://www.frisco.org/vb/showthread.php?5651-Steam-Locomotive-Diagram-Book-1880-1942 ...shows 4100-4134 equipped with Dupont stokers; however, it also notes the following numbers with no stoker: 4103 4109 4110 4111 4114 4115 4116 4117 4118 4119 4121 4125 4122 I find it hard to imagine that this many would not have been so equipped. Maybe they all were later in life? Best Regards,
Do not confuse a coal pusher with a mechanical stoker. The 4136, 4137, 4149, 4140, 4142-4148 had a coal pusher, which which was a device that shoved coal forward and into the stoker screw trough. Will dig up a pic at home.
Whoops. That's exactly what I did. Thanks for clarifying and for the extra data, Karl. I'll look forward to the pic - I don't think I've seen any hardware photos before (that I know of). Best Regards,
