Gentlemen (and outnumbered ladies),

As I noted on one of my long addresses, the portal page that you are all familiar with is an add-on product to the software that drives the forum. I am/was familiar with this product as it was used on TB before a portal (a/k/a content management system) became part of the software.

We all get used to things as they are and this makes change difficult. I'm no different.

I have been working on a portal page which you can now view for approval/disapproval. There is a tab at the top of the page that says "Testing." You may also click on that word here to see it. It looks just a hair different but most of the major elements are there from the old one.

Remembering that;

1) I believe that getting rid of an older, add-on product is in the best interest of the site, and,
2) This is part of the actual software that drives the site,

I would like to swith to this one.

However, I would like your opinion as it is important. If you have comments or questions feel free to post after looking at the portal page and voting in the poll.

Regards,

Charlie

Charlie:

Before I vote I have a couple of questions. How are the subjects chosen in the "Featured" section? Are they posts or threads? I am asking because I would hope that these are related only to threads of prototypical or modeling importance and important general forum concerns or issues.

Thanks in advance.

Bob,

The forum staff can choose any interesting thread and promote it. I don't see any particular rules being involved in the choosing.. I think it would just be a, "Hey, this would be a good one for the front page" type of deal. I just posted a couple of threads that are going on now in that space. If someone posts some good pictures or a video or something, those are good to promote. It's really just a headline and it's best to add something new or different every few days just to keep it fresh.

All those articles are, are links to the actual thread once you get into them. An actual article can be created there that would just appear there but I don't anticipate it because it would not get as much exposure there as it would on the actual forum.

Hopefully that addressed what you were asking.

Let me add this because I think this is what you are referring to; Right now there are a lot of threads and posts about changes, etc., and this is not the normal thing for the forum. We are going to have some of that for a few weeks because there are some changes happening. It's like a construction project - eventually all of the ladders and paint brushes will be gone and the sawdust cleaned up and things will be back to normal. You'll just have to tolerate all of the other chatter as we work through this process. The end result is intended to be better and serve us into the future.

Charlie, yes it did. My concern was simply that these "Featured" items were either chosen or otherwise and not simply because of the number of replies. Sometimes well-meaning threads on any forum go south and get a significant number of replies/opinions and people in general just wish they would go away, let alone be featured because of sheer response volume.

Right. I think we can say that those would be things that were considered to be really good stuff and as such would be featured.

I'm old, a bit crotchity and dislike changes. I like being able to go the portal and see a listing of recent topics. If there was more than the page could hold, I knew that I needed to go to the main forum page to see what I might have missed. The new page has every response listed separately and who knows how many topics have been pushed off.

That said, I don't know squat about forum/message board programs or their codes, but if you think that going to a new portal/CMS page makes maintaining the site easier, than go for it.

Charlie,

I will hold off my vote for now. I like the addition of the featured section. But I liked the portal page in the fact that it listed what topics have been posted on in chronological order. Please put this back in place over just the post updates. If this is changed It'll have my full approval.

Any one else favor having just the threads instead of individual posts pop up?

As a comparison, I have put recent threads over recent posts. Recent threads should be what was on the other one.

When I log on I see this

We have disabled the portal page for repair. We will return it as soon as possible. In the meantime, please follow one of these links:

Regrettably, I will not be using what I am seeing right now.

I don't mind the new look, but I do dislike not being able to view the home page from my ipad.

I know you've put up a place holder page that works on regular computers, but when using safari on my ipad, there is a php error displayed.

(and no, I DO NOT want to install an app to view the forum...)

Guys,

The portal page as it use to be was the home page. Like if all you typed in was www.frisco.org that is what would pop up.

Tom, go to what's new and it will show you all the new posts.

Here is a screen shot of the new home page for you mobile people.

Charlie, would it possible to make it so every person can choose between the two (threads only and all posts) so each person can be happy?

The one thing that is consistant about technology is that it make us accept change, good, bad or otherwise.
