Howdy, Last week, I had the privilege of previewing a new DVD professionally produced for the Railroad Historical Museum in Springfield MO. The DVD is a continuous slideshow of pictures taken in the 60s and early 70s around the Springfield area. The DVD shows slides of passenger equipment including locomotives and passenger cars. It also depicts a nice sampling of freight locomotives and rolling stock. After watching the DVD, I have several questions about passenger equipment colors. I saw several lightweight passenger cars that appeared to be painted in black and silver. Several roofs looked black on red cars, too. Anyway, this DVD has terrific shots of the track, facilities, and areas around Springfield. I heartily recommend it. The proceeds from sale of the DVD go for a fantastic cause: restoration of Frisco 4524 and upkeep of the museum. By the way, the museum’s website is www.rrhistoricalmuseum.zoomshare.com. Hi Mike, I received a copy of the DVD as well, and it is well worth the price. In addition to the car you note, which I believe are actually Pullman green, not black (ok, the roofs and ends MAY be black), there was also a shot of lightweight RPO 252 and lightweight coach 1251, which had been stripped of their fluting and painted Pullman green. My favorite shots were the ones of the the foreign road head end cars. I was especially interested in the Air Force flight simulator car(s). Paul
I'd like to build a list of the cars receiving that treatment for modeling purposes. I know at this point that some cars, like Huntleigh received pullman green paint, but retained the fluting. I know there were multiple cars, because I've seen three cars together (see the last image on Mike Condren's page on the last Frisco passenger train http://www.condrenrails.com/MRP/MemphisCentralStation/Frisco-Last-Pass-Train.htm ). Cars 252 and 1251 appear to be unique, in that they lost their fluting when they were repainted into Pullman green. Paul

1251 is also in Marre and Sommers' "Frisco In Color," page 124. After it had another digit added to it's number (For m/w). The only "streamline" cars with the fluting completely removed were 1251 and 252. Tom
After passenger service ended or was downsized, didn't the Frisco paint some of the red areas on the stainless cars black or Pullman green for MOW or company service? I know later the heavyweight equipment that was used for MOW service was painted silver. I know the signal department used company cars for shipping material. The maintainers would order what they needed from Springfield and several people's items were loaded onto an old baggage car and it was shipped to locations listed. The poor guy at the end of the list rarely received anything he ordered! First come first serve I spose. Steve.
Some cars had black roofs and ends, Some cars had Pullman green ends, window areas and lettering. The cars with the PG ends and window stripe all had black roofs. Some cars, but not all, still with red trim also had black roofs. I've never seen an actual "list" of what was done on which cars. My "theory" is that in the last days of passenger service, when some roofs, ends etc. needed painting, they used whatever paint they had the most of or whatever they had handy. I thought the cars with the fluting removed completely (1251, 252) and painted Pullman green overall w/gray roofs (which was the Frisco "standard" psgr. car scheme), looked worlds better that the ones touched up with Pullman green and black roofs. My opinion. EDIT: In Molo's "Frisco/Katy Color Guide To Freight Equipment," on page 7, SLSF diner 1550 has black roof and ends, with Pulman green window area and lettering. Tom
I was watching this video again, and I noticed another modeling gem in the group of pictures. There is a photo of the body of GP7 622 loaded on a Kansas City Southern flatcar. According to the disposition list here: http://www.frisco.org/shipit/index.php?threads/slsf-590-632-dispositions.514/ 622 was traded in to EMD in October 1968. Since the CD is pictures from the 1960s, what i think that photo shows is the hulk of 622 ready for shipment to EMD. Paul
The move to green occurred well before the end of Frisco passenger service, when the Frisco removed the fluting from two of its light-weight cars, number 1251, nee Pasadena Hills (1960), and RPO-baggage 252, nee Valley Park (1964). The Huntleigh was all Pullman green, and rode it many times on The Southland, and consumed many beers while sitting inside while she served as the Iron Horse Inn.
