When I was working for the Frisco, we used one of the former Santa Fe cabooses between Oklahoma City and Tulsa. We never had markers to hang, but when I caught one of the through freights, there were markers on all 4 corners of the caboose. What rule allowed us to not display markers on the local?
Rule 19 was amended with ETT System Number 1, October 17, 1971, p46 as follows: ADD: "NOTE: A reflectorized marker showing red to the rear may be used by day or by night in lieu marker lamps."
Thanks for the info, but I don't recall anything red showing to the rear. There were those 2 white diamonds on either side of the door showing to the rear, but I don't know if they were reflectorized.
UnclePete, take a look at this thread showing a Frisco caboose with the markers in place. The caboose has been maintained "as built" by the owners since retirement. http://www.frisco.org/vb/showthread.php?t=4185 Here's a specific picture with the described markers, yellow in color. http://www.frisco.org/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=11131&d=1276050181
The amended rule 19 does not refer to the yellow diamonds. The amendment specifically mentions the color red. The Frisco placed a square of red Scotch-Lite on each end of the caboose. These reflectors served as the markers as described in amended rule 19. The caboose second from the left in this link has the red "marker". http://www.frisco.org/vb/attachment.php?attachmentid=3934&d=1151463877 The degree to which these red Scotch-Lite plates were maintained is a topic for a nother discussion.
