I have several Decal sets for Diesel Loco's and they all have, in addition to the "FRISCO", the complete name spelled out, "St Louis - San Fransisco".
Can someone enlighten me about this? I have never seen a photograph with the whole road name spelled out?

As the Frisco was planning the purchase of its F3 units from EMD, the EMD proposal for the paint scheme in which to decorate these F3 units included the words "St Louis - San Francisco" on the sides of the F3 cabs. For some reason - thankfully(!) - the SLSF decided instead to use just the simple name "Frisco" on the sides of their F3's.

As far as I know, the original EMD proposal never made it onto the side of a Frisco F3, or any other diesel locomotive.

See the attached EMD artist rendering showing the original EMD proposal.

Fascinating. I had neither heard of, or seen this before. Can't decide if I like it or not........

I am gonna have to pay closer attention to the Quote that John Markl has on his signature.
    Thanks for the answer, Ken.
About two minutes after I entered the thread, I thought to myself that I had seen it before, but the mind can't seem to make the connection as fast as it once did.
You had created a thread a few weeks back named, "Just Some Pics".
In this thread you had posted a couple pics of that print.
My mind had seen the "St Louis - San Francisco" lettering, but I was so accustomed to seeing "Frisco" - that it never registered.
Guess that I will just chalk it up to Another Senior Moment!

  5. Wow, What decal set is that? I would like to have a unit with the full lettering just for kicks. Be a nice contrast to the other plain Cab Units I have painted up.:)
    Ship it on the Frisco!!!

    Murphy -

The Champ EH-91 Frisco EMD decal set has the ST. LOUIS - SAN FRANCISCO name as well as the FRISCO name for the F3 cab side.

I have a spare set (HO), complete and unused, in the original Champ packet, which you could have for a couple of bucks plus 1st class postage if you want to try them.

Champ made a good decal, and we were fortunate in that they did a lot of Frisco stuff. The Microscale setting solutions, blue first (Micro-Set) underneath, then red (Micro-Sol) on top work well on them.

Most stuff I have is "O" Scale Champ Decals, however, I have eight of the "St Louis - San Francisco" in HO. No nose decal (coonskin herald).
If you want numbers too, them I will have to look for them.
I be willing to part with four of them.
Send me a Stamped - self addressed envelope and their yours.

  9. Thank you very much:). I would really appreciate that. My mom will get the stamps soon. I have a F-3 Plastic engine in Undecorated condition to "Friscoize". This seems to be a cool addition to my small Frisco engine roster.
    Thanks again,
