Hi All: I have a quick question about the Lloyd Stagner book: "Steam Locomotives Of The Frisco Lines". That question is: Does this cover the TOC19* era better than Joe Collias' "Frisco Power" book? * Turn Of the (19th) Century Also, is Lloyd's book a hardback or softback book? Thank you very much for your input. Andre
I have seen Stagner's book hard and soft bound. It has 42 pages devoted to the period 1876 - 1928. Overall it is 122 pages long. It deals with primarily with an overview of eras as opposed Collias' book, which concentrates more on the locomotive types and their development. I saw fit to purchase both in order to get the widest view possible. I also picked up Frisco Steam Finale by Stagner (softbound) to finish the set. I found a hard bound (they had many copies) Frisco Power in an antique mall in Ozark, Mo west of 60 and south of MO-14 (about 102 N 20th St) last fall.
Keith - The softcover book Frisco Steam Finale (1995) was authored by Lloyd Stagner. Lloyd intended it to be a supplement to his earlier book Steam Locomotives of the Frisco Line (1976). Ken
Lloyd actually authored at least one other book before he died that had some Frisco material in it. In 2006 Morning Sun Books published "Trackside around Kansas 1960-1975 with Lloyd Stagner”. The book was dedicated to the railroads of Kansas. There are 5 pages and 12 photos dedicated to the Frisco. These are NOT are roster shots but wonderful images of locals and mainline freights passing by various small towns and industries. There are several great shots of depots in vivid color. Since Lloyd lived in Newton, KS most of the shots are taken on the Wichita and Burrton Sub's, but not all of them. The rest of the book is fascinating as well as the same type of imagery is depicted for the other railroads. I skimmed through the other railroads once or twice before noticing the 2 pages dedicated to the Royal American Carnival train in the Rock Island section. For modeling and weathering purposes alone, this book is worth every penny.
Here is a link to the book at E-bay. Not bad! Dan http://cgi.ebay.com/Steam-Locomotiv...365?pt=US_Nonfiction_Book&hash=item230dc1781d
Lloyd passed away within the last year/year and a half. He was a prolific railroad locomotive author. His Steam Locomotives of the Frisco Lines was a real bonanza for me when it was first published, even if it does have some errors (what book doesn't?). Many others have followed - with better books - but Lloyd was one of the first. He certainly demonstrated that a locomotive book specific to the Frisco would be a good seller. Ken
Anytime you would be interested in an out of print book, you should have a look at "Alibris" or "ABE Books" or both. They're internet book sellers, I've done business with both and there are lots of RR books at decent prices (Also a few at really stupid prices). Tom
Hi Dan! I saw that on eBay, too. It is a soft cover book. Given the high use my reference books receive, I think I need a hard cover version. I hit Amazon, and there's 8 copies available, but none of them say whether they're hard or soft cover books! Andre
If anyone is interested, there are several copies of "Steam Locomotives Of The Frisco Line" by Lloyd Stagner on ABE Books and Alibris in the $20-25 range. Right now: 1-31-11, 10:30 PM. FYI. Tom
