Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Looks a lot better with the silver trucks! If it IS a smoothside (and not fluted) it'll be super! It will also be an easy fix (decals, no painting) to make one of the PRR Texas Special cars. Tom
My email Exchange with WKW Karl, I am sorry. I did not realize that our artist did the fluting artwork. They are actually painted on the car. He just came in just as I received your email. Actually I can't tell from the photo if the car is smooth-side with a shadow-stripe paint job orif the car has fluted sides. The prototype cars were smooth-sided with shadow-stripes. Arthur Dubin's book "More Classic Trains has three photographs. Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Well if that car is definintely a smooth side with shadow line paint that's going to be super. And some re-lettering with decals will allow the Texas Special car(s) to be modeled also. After all they ran quite a while longer than the PRR cars decorated for the Meteor. Now if we N scale modelers can only live long enough for Walthers to offer it in our scale... Tom
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Thanks to Karl, Paul and Tom for the excellent research that they've provided to this board on this series of cars. It appears that your efforts have improved the accuracy of this product. I may even buy one to see how they dealt with the shadow striping! One more fact that I would like to nail down: Did the cars assigned to The Texas Special all have "The Texas Special" on thier letterboards? Rich
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper The Cascade Range had the "Neon" script Texas Special on the main letterboard, and the small letter boards at each end were lettered in the same style, Pullman. Also worth a look if you can find it is the TRRA Historical and Technical Society's Issue 35- Autumn 1995, which covers the B&O through Pullmans with the Frisco/Katy and MP.
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Both of the Cascade series PRR cars painted in shadowlining for The Texas Special had The Texas Special Script lettering in the Letterboards. The reports I've seen indicated this was also true for the Rapids series cars, but I haven't seen photographs to verify this. The two Cascade series cars used in the Meteor had PENNSYLVANIA in the letterboards. Paul
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper I have the PRR Historical Society's "Pennsylvania RR Passenger Car Painting And Lettering Guide." According to that, the 10-5 cars "Cascade Meadow" and "Cascade Range" were the cars painted with the Texas Special script. "Cascade Brim" and "Cascade Ravine" were lettered with "Pennsylvania" in Railraod Roman style for Meteor service. Later on in the 1950's (ca. 1953), the Cascade cars were painted back to the PRR Tuscan scheme and 10-6 cars "Swatara Rapids" and "Tioga Rapids" were painted in the red/silver/shadowline scheme with Texas Special "neon" script. Tom
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Has anyone ever seen an in-service photograph of either Cascade Brim or Cascade Ravine? The only published photos of which I am aware are company photos taken at the Pullman Company shops. Gordon
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Gordon--The only photo (other than builders') of ANY of the "Cascade" cars I've seen was of "Cascade Meadow" at New York Sunnyside Yards taken May, 1948. That picture is in the PRR Historical Society's painting and lettering book. Looks like some other shots of those cars would have turned up here or there?? Tom
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper I believe that this photo of the Cascade Meadow also appears on p88 of Railway Prototype Cyclopedia RP CYC 11. RP CYC Publishing PO BOx451 Chesterfield, MO 63006-0451
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Howdy, For the uninformed (maybe only me), does this thread mean the expected car from Walthers could be relettered or made accurate for additional cars on the Texas Special or trains? Best, mike
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Mike--If that car is a smooth-side with a shadowline paint effect, it will be fine also for the Texas Special (The car is in the Walthers' ad is how the Meteor cars were lettered). It would just have to be re-lettered in the Texas Special's "neon" script. The actual car names have escaped me at the moment. I have to look them up every time... Tom
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Thanks Tom, that is what I needed to know. I'll put several on the reservation list. ~mike
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper You'll only need four 10-5's to do the (2) Meteor and (2) Texas Spcial cars of the PRR "fleet." Tom
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Thanks, I ordered them today. Could those cars be used for other Pullmans on the Meteor and Special with a few changes? I am looking for a source of cars that I don't have to kit bash and work miracles on...lol. ~mike
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Mike--The 10-5 smoothsides (as the Walthers cars) are quite a bit different than the Frisco and Katy 14-4's with the stainless steel fluting. Tom
Cascade Brim... Gordon--Reference your inquiry about an in-service photo of "Cascade Brim," there's a 1967 photo (In Tuscan livery at Chicago) of the car in "PRR Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment, Vol. 3" page 28 (Morning Sun, 2002). FYI. Tom
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper Thanks Tom, but I was really thinking about in-service photos while still painted in shadowline. Actually, in-service photos of ANY of the PRR Pullmans in red-and-silver, either with or without shadowlines, would be great to find. The one at Sunnyside Yard that has already been mentioned is the only one of any of the cars of which I am aware.
Re: Walthers Pennsylvania "Meteor" Sleeper I figured as much, but since photos of "Brim" were so rare, I thought it might have been wrecked. Tom
