I joined last week. I was born in Rolla and my grandparents lived in Newburg. My grandfather worked for the Frisco. His name was Nelson Campbell. My great grandfather also worked for the Frisco at the Newburg roundhouse. When I was very young we lived up on the hill in Newburg and could see the tracks from our house. My grandfather was working the baggage car on the Meteor and would wave his lantern as the train headed West and we would turn our porch light on and off in response. Grandfather ended his Frisco career as a freight conductor. I have rode on almost every public excursion ran by the 1522. My main interest is Frisco steam and passenger operation. My father lives in Springfield. Dennis Slone
Welcome aboard Dennis. Would you happen to have any sort of relations to one of our other members, Brad Slone?
Welcome Dennis. My grandfather worked for the Frisco also, and on the Salem Branch of all places. My mother used to catch the train in Wesco as a young girl and ride in the caboose to Salem where she took piano lessons. She was 41 when I was born in 1977, so I don't have a lot of memories of the line, but I've tried to collect photos and stories of the area. The St. James library has a great collection, as well as the Western Historical Manuscripts at UMR. It's nice to have a fellow Eastern Divisioner on board. BTW, I lived in Rolla for a short time (on 10th St.) and worked at Briggs and Stratton for five years before they packed up and headed to China.
Any relation to the McGilvry's? We had a Hattie Sloane marry a McGilvry that worked on the Frisco out of Springfield. Dan
Dennis, Not that I know of either, but it is a rare spelling, who knows? Even though where out numbered, we do get around! Brad
