In describing my late 1940s operating scheme to my KC buds, I have had some say that steam was mostly absent from the Northern Division at that time. I have checked my books and have not seen many photos of steam in KC and the Northern Division in the late 1940s.

Does anyone know what the official steam engine assignments were for the Northern Division in the late 1940s? I just gotta believe that steam was still in service here during this time period.

Thanks in advance for your help.

There's a letter from the late Lee Buffington in an FMIG NL issue (#35; December '82) covering steam assignments in the late 1930's.
Also Lloyd Stagner has late 1940's steam assignments in his little "Frisco Sream Finale" book. Lloyd acknowledges Lee's assistance in the forward of the book.

    Thanks Tom,

If anyone would know I would think of Lee or Don Wirth. I will start reviewing the copies scanned by Doug because I joined after Charlie became the editor.

Looking at Lloyd Stagner's "Frisco Steam Finale" there are three diagrams (spread sheets) showing how many of a class of engine is in which division: JAN 1st 1946; DEC 31st 1948 and SEPT 20 1951. In the Jan. 46 diagram, it shows 117 active steam locomotives and 15 yard switchers in the Northern Division. No road diesels. Also no road diesels 12-31-48--slightly fewer steam locomotives than '46. Still a lot of steam in the ND!

A bit OT, but now that my son has helped to shift my Frisco locale (benchwork started going up Sunday!) I personally want to start going through old employee magazines where Fuel Performance Records listed locomotive assignments by unit #, train and subdivision.

I've nearly completed my spreadsheet of River Division trains, so I see the Northern Division in my future.

Now...to convince my son to trade in the ATSF 2nd gen. diesels for ATSF steam power...:)

Good information gents, thank you. I don't get excited when people that don't follow the Frisco make blanket statements. Comments like that make me want to do research so I can be knowledgeable in the future.

Tom, I don't have Stagners Frisco Steam Finale, does it show the engine assigments by type for the Northern Divison 1947-50?

    Thanks for the help.
