Frisco Yellow Paint Match?

    Hi All:

In the distant past, I used Floquil UP Armour Yellow to represent the rich yellow of the Frisco's black and yellow units. (Note: I modeled the 60s era primarily. Didn't the original delivery B&Y units have a different shade of yellow than was used later?)

    Anyway...

Seeing as I'm doing my first Frisco unit in 10+ years, I have a question:

I will be using Oddballs Frisco stripe/lettering set. I'm a bit concerned with the way the decal yellow will match the UP Amour Yellow.

For you guys that still paint your own: What are you using for Frisco yellow?

    Thanks in advance.

Though I usually use Microscale's Frisco b/y decal set, I generally use Floquil Reefer Yellow for the Frisco b/y scheme. It seems to match the Microscale shade of yellow well.

Oddballs' color of yellow has changed through the years as Tom has moved to make his shade of yellow more opaque. I guess it depends on which Oddballs set you have. I can see where UP Armour Yellow might be a better match for Oddballs.

On the prototype, I think different shades of yellow showed up through the years after shopping, plus some of them looked like they faded over time.

    Thanks Ken.

The Oddballs hood unit decals I'll be using were purchased a couple years ago.

I too, have noted different shades of the yellow in prototype pics (and in the distant past, in person) especially after reshopping/aging.

Perhaps I'd be best advised to start decaling first and see whether the Armour Yellow or Reefer Yellow would best match. The parts that would be painted are removed/separate so this would be possible.

Scale coat has a color they call Eire Lackawana Yellow. Give the color chip a look at.

I have done several Frisco GP, F and RS units over the last 15 years.
I mix my yellow using Floquil UP armor yellow as a base to get the basic amber yellow then brighten it with reefer yellow and lighten it with reefer white when I want it to look faded for a weathered appearance.
Depending on whose decals or factory paint runs you are trying to match you may even add a drop or two of SP red to get the yellow to move away from having a green tint.
Test your mix by dipping a toothpick in and dot it on the decal or a clear piece of acetate let it dry and evaluate you color before making another hit to the mix.
Manufacturers, in my opinion are all over the place when it comes to matching Frisco's yellow.

    Howdy,

You might check this paint reference http://www.frisco.org/vb/showpost.php?p=10266&postcount=1 taken from one of the old FMIG Lines newsletters and edited by long time Frisco modelers.

I've used these as a basis for years, and the colors worked well for me. If you have improvements or better recommendations, please add them to the reference.

    Best regards,
    mike

Howdy, folks. Been terribly busy but trying to catch up on things.

Andre, I was quite happy with Scalecoat's CN Yellow for a match to the decals I used on my one and only F7A. Yet another opnion! :)

    Best Regards,

    Re: Frisco Orange Paint Match?

    Greetings all,
I was at the local hobby shop, and was looking over the paint and found a good match for SLSF Mandarin Orange it seems to match the set of Microscale decals I have.
I found it in the model car section, it is Model Masters and called Boyd paint, Sunburst. #52708. It is very thick and will need to be thinned a bit to airbrush. I have used these paints with success it has a glossy finish, ready for decals.
    Any thoughts?
    Tom
