Howdy, Is there much interest in having an electronics forum on FRISCrg? Topics would include DCC decoder and sound installations, signaling, etc. Please share your point of view with the group. Best regards, mike
Mike, I think that there would be a good audience for this topic as well as several members who can speak with expertise. I would like to see how to wire a DCC decoder in a Proto 2000 E8A for example. I am electronically challenged and any help would be appreciated. Ship IT on the Frisco! Rick
Rick: Here is a link to the TCS web page that shows their instalation of their recomended decoder for the E8 you talked about. http://www.tcsdcc.com/decoderpics/LifeLike P2K E8_9/lifelike_p2k_e8_9.htm. Another good place to get decoder tips on is www.lichfieldstation.com There is a rumor that TCS will be coming out with their DP5X again with back emf you may want to wait for that. I am not sure how many light functions you would want on your E8. Bob P.S. As I am an Electronics tech. by trade I am not sure that I would really want to be involved in a forum on electronics. That is what I do for a living or at least what I did until I was laid off. I try to keep away from that as much as I can in my hobby. I hope that everyone will understand if I do not take part. I will help with decoder installs and recommendations as much as I can.
I have a Proto 2K E8A, in which I will be installing a decoder. I would be glad to help you Rick in getting a decoder installed in yours as well and we could document the process with text and pictures, and post that (drop me a note). Thanks to Yardmaster for the URL, but that particular install deals with a plug-in decoder and does not deal with identifying which wires go where if you use a "generic decoder" or if you want to add/change equipment (bulbs to LEDs for example). I can understand Bob's point of view, not wanting to carry work into a hobby. I my case, electronics and model railroading are the hobby. I have collected a lot of neat stuff over the years and keeping the construction information and steps simple is key to more people's enjoyment.
I would like to see this as a section. It would help out newbie's (like me) when they get to where they're ready for DCC.
