E7A (EA7) - Coupler Shrouds, Lift Bars, Draft Gear And Buffer Strike Plate Mechanisms

I have been looking at photos of the coupler shrouds of E units and wondering on how they worked.

I noticed on a E7A (EA7) photograph it appeared the coupler pocket and the strike plate were on a sliding mechanism and locked in place.

Did they slide open or were they hinged?

I was also wondering on how the coupler lift bars worked in conjunction with the shroud doors?

Some photographs appeared that they where removed permanently.

I guess the engine shop got tired of hammering the dents and getting them to fit and close.

 

I am sitting at my desk doing this from memory, but I believe E8A shrouds were sliders.

E7A (EA7) shrouds were hinged.

Here’s a good shot of E8A SLSF 2006 "Traveler" with the doors open and the pilot rotated upward to allow access to the steam line.

Knew that it had to slide out based on some of the photographs.

The strike plate bulging out was the clue.
