Anyone, any scale--Ever try to model or kit-bash a Frisco 1060 4-6-4? I've thought about trying it with an NYC Hudson, but I've never even seen a (draftsman's) drawing of the Frisco Hudson. A 4-6-2 might even be a better place to start?? I don't know if a diagram book drawing would be enough to work with. I always liked those engines streamlined or post war. There are post war photos of 1062 and 1065 with pilots similar to the 4300's (The tenders w/o streamlining look like the 4300's and 4400's). I just wondered if anyone tried to model one or even just had thought about it??

I had thought about it at one time using an IHC 4-6-2 pacific. I think a NYC hudson would be to far off from a Frisco model to convert it, unless you something like a made up series of hudsons that look like the NYC hudsons.

Ethan may be on the right track. I received an IHC 4-6-2 painted as #1066 (http://thelibrary.org/lochist/frisco/friscoline/images/photos/p00709.jpg)

By seriously reshaping the tender (including changing to an oil-burner and adding a four-wheel trailing truck), it wouldn't be too bad.

Of course, I took the path of converting into Pacific #1057 and have turned it into a very leisurely project for my backshop.

    Best Regards,

Years ago there was a husky Athearn HO 4-6-2 (Boston & Maine prototype) that would have been a good starter. But about any engine used would have to have drastic surgery--as did Frisco's own 4-6-2's. An NYC Hudson chasis might be a start, but stack, domes and cab (And tender) would have to be changed. The tender would probably have to be scratch-built, no matter what engine you started with--Probably too big a project to undertake, still I love those photos of 1066 (Right-hand photo, after de-streamlining), freshly painted and all slicked up ready for the 1946 version of the Sunnyland or KC-Florida Special...

I painted one of the inexpensive Monogram HO static models of the NYC Hudson for Frisco 1062 years ago. It's sitting here right above the PC. Not even close, but it still looks good. I left off the pin stripes.

Think the Frisco West Shops couldn't whip up some good looking engines? Just have a look at 1066!

Don't forget 805/806, "Memphian" (the overnight Memphis-St. Louis run). Frisco Power has a nice photo of #1067 approaching SE Jct. in the morning, heavy laden with sleepers (see the thread on the "Memphian" at http://www.frisco.org/vb/showthread.php?t=1632&highlight=memphian).

Oh, to have been a worker or even a loafer around the West Springfield erecting hall in those days.

Tom, I hope to see pictures once you start on this project!

    Best Regards,

I'll post some pictures soon as Life-Like or Bachmann releases a model of 1066!

    Tom,

I have thought for sometime of how to kitbash a 4-6-4, but unfortunately I haven't come up with a good candidate to start from. If you could come up with a engine with 74" drivers and walschaert valve gear then the project is do able. The scullin's center driver will be a problem if you would like to model one so equipped. The tender being of a welded design would make scratchbuilding much easier. As far as modifying a boiler and cab, I have had good luck in striping plastic boilers and rebuilding with Frisco appliances. I have used this method to come up with a #40, #1271, and at present working on a 3500 series.

I'm in N scale, so it's really just a pipe dream...To get the detail parts and four-wheel trucks, you'd probably have to scrap three different engines. N steam engines aren't very good anyway. At least there are N scale racehorses, FA's and switch engines.
