    Thank you Charlie!

I have slowed just slightly as summer gets so busy, but I will pick back up soon!

Thank you to all in this forum for your help in my research.

I have had a great time digging as much information as I can about the Salem Branch and its various tributaries.

    Jacob,

Great photograph of the water tank.

Do you know what is the date of the photograph?

Looks like late 1970s to early 1980s.

  5. Pat,

I think the railroad water tank at Cook Station had water sourced from two different pools of water north and south, connected by one foundation.

The locomotives re-watered there by siphoning. They could make one pool of water taller, better for siphoning not to break the seal, while the other pool was filling up with water from the spring up in the hollow.

  6. Note the water is over flowing from the north pool. Perhaps the same from the south pool also.

Is the spring discharging to anywhere else?

Sure, the little village needed water too. Anyway, it takes a long time to fill a pool.

In 1873 the new St. Louis, Salem And Little Rock (SLS&LR) Railroad started operating. There was a water tank on the mainline at Cuba, MO. If that Cuba tank could not keep up to mainlines traffic that was a problem and the SLS&LR was second fiddle. Salem had a tank also. All three tanks were used.

Cooks Station: History with photographs. A neat place! Labeled as "share this post". Open to the public.
