The Frisco owned Texas Special sleepers were named for notable Missourians. It may be a stretch to call Joseph Pulitzer a Missiorian, but he did buy and merge the STL Post and STL Dispatch into a single newspaper. No doubt the Frisco used his name to pay homage to the hometown newspaper publisher.

Pulitzer at one time did have a faint connection with the Frisco. James McGrath Morris writes in his book Pulitzer of his early years in Saint Louis, "Pulitzer continued working at his mix of jobs connected with the law offices on Market Street. At one point he accepted the task of recording land deeds for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad in a dozen counties to the southwest of St. Louis where the railroad planned to build a line to Springfield, Missouri." The Atlantic & Pacific was one of the Frisco's predecessor companies.
