I wonder if they will fix a major problem with their previous run of Frisco SW7's (o/w) ..... The headlight is the dual sealed beam type, like what was used on the Frisco SW9's. The pics of the proposed new release models look to be the same.

But, the Frisco SW7's came with the large single lens headlights.

Glad to finally see some more frisco stuff coming out.

I'm trying to remember, these didn't MU did they? And how long did they make it in the B&Y scheme?

Ethan - You are correct, the Frisco SW7's did not have m/u capability. In fact, as I recall, only one or two of the later SW9's came with m/u.

Even so, I routinely run my two SW7's in a set together!

I'm away from all my reference material, but as I recall, a few of the SW7's stayed in their b/y colors for a long time.

I agree - It's good to see another HO Frisco locomotive coming our way, even better that it will be in b/y colors!

Glad to see them offer these in black and yellow, sad that there isn't a non-sound version. I think the "All New Paragon 2" still sounds like a UFO in a fifties sci-fi movie.

If you want to install the correct headlights Detail Associates has the part - Pyle large single beam headlight for early EMD NW/SW switchers Walthers part #229-2015.

Take a look at pictures of 303, and 304 that are out there; I see dual headlights, over/under, and left/right pairs. 303 has a red over white on the front, and 304 has a left/right white/white with silver bezel. The switchers from 305 on look to have all doubles.

Pictures of the prototypes look like they match the model to me...

That is what I said, down on Mill St. about 73. We were assigned to work the switch jobs, because of the snow. The crew had let me fall asleep. I woke up to what sounded like a UFO, then the crew told me they was on the ground. I just knew I was fired, lucky I had a old head crew, they said they went on the ground all the time on Mill St. They told me to just stay in the cab. Just popped right back on. When I heard that on the Paragon 2 decoder, I went into panic mode.

Compared to Soundtraxx Tsunami sound, I think most of the other sound decoders are way off the mark and either don't sound much like the prototype or just sound ridiculous. As one of the local guys here says, if all you want is noise, anybody can create that - but if you want the sound of a real locomotive, Soundtraxx is what you want.

The SW7's as delivered from EMD had large, single beam headlights on both ends. Later, much later, the SLSF replaced them with various dual beam fixtures. The SW9's came from EMD with the dual beam headlights.

The SW7's carried the original large headlights for almost all, if not all, of their Frisco life in b/y livery.

There is no doubt, that Soundtraxx makes a great decoder. The paragon is also a good decoder. From what I have seen, they operate very good. I still think Soundtraxx is a little better, although sound is most likely a matter of where you are at the time. A set of engines sound a lot different, if you are down in the middle of a yard, 6 inches of snow, at 3 AM. A sunny day at 80, from over in the nose bleed section, is quite different. We had quite the issue, with coal trains, sneaking up on us in Wyoming, course with the temp at -30, lots of clothes, and a 30 MPH wind.
Well, you have to be their !!!!

I have one of the earlier runs of the Broadway SW7, without DCC (but capable of installing a plug-in decoder) that I picked up for 50 bucks. I haven't done anything with it except give it a test run, and I'm satisfied with it.

Just curious- did any of these show up anywhere on the Central Division?

For everyone's benefit here are the sample sound files that Soundtraxx and BLI provide for their rendition of the EMD 567. I captured them and converted to MP3 files for posting.

My reasons for prefering the Soundtraxx are manifold. One is because you can hear the diesel's exhaust pulses (which you do on the ground outside the cab) and there is more low frequency component in the overall sound. Soundtraxx also caught the 567-powered locomotive transition as the locomotive was throttled-up. Add to that the capability of mimicing the true operation of a locomotive; the throttle gets it rolling and the brake stops it - not the throttle.

Which one sounds best to you guys? I think I like the BLI best for a 567 powered switcher.

Soundtraxx, most definitely. It captures that low rumbling, and sounds closest to a non-turbo 567 prime mover (my favorite diesel sound, BTW).

I have a couple of the older BLI SW's left over from my HO days. I thought it was pretty cool at the time, and still not too bad. I have Soundtraxx Tsunami's in my S scale SHS brand SW/NW's and they sound very, very good.

I'm not aversive to different sound chips in like-models if for nothing else a bit of audio variety. All one's power having the same sound chip in it will make things sound repetitive. (There are always sound looping and repetitions in sound chips.)

BTW: I think the BLI Frisco switcher model itself is a fine looking piece.

Just so everyone is clear, the two numbers produced were 301 and 303. I didn't look closely at the BLI website to see how they had it listed, but both Factory Direct Trains and Train World listed 301 and 304. I don't normally buy diesels, but as it happens 304 was a Fort Smith regular for several years (we initially had 292, then 304 and for the last several years 213) so I ordered it from FDT. What came was 303 and when I contacted them they turned around and contacted BLI who said it was actually all a mistake as only 301 and 303 were ever made. I don't know that this matters to anyone else, but as it was specifically 304 I ordered I sent it back and I have to say that FDT was very accommodating and very apologetic.

Ah yes... the good ol' days in Ft. Smith. I also recall #222 being in Ft. Smith. I also remember purchasing a Hallmark VO1000 model after one of my in-cab experiences with the Frisco's Baldwin's and numbered the finished model for #222.

    Good times, they were.

On a side note, for those of us who picked up an older BLI SW7 that's DCC-ready, any idea what size decoder will fit in? I'm not interested in installing sound at this point.

An NCE D14SR works in the SW7.
