Based at Springfield, MO, the new units were favored for the Tulsa-Birmingham hotshots because of their quick turnaround capability. 3) In the summer of 1963, SLSF ordered eight more units. Again, they included four demonstrators; red and white Nos. GE 51-54. The new demos broke in on the PRR in December 1962, demonstrated on the Rock Island and then became SLSF 812-815. 4) The final unit of the 1966 order, SLSF 831, was the last U25B built, thus the Frisco owned both the first and last U25B. 5) SLSF 800-807 delivered with high front noses. 6) SLSF 808-831 delivered with low front noses. 7) SLSF 808-815 delivered with single center front windshield. 8) SLSF 816-831 delivered with 2-piece center front windshield. 9) Paint Schemes - a) SLSF 800-815 painted black and yellow scheme when built. b) U25B SLSF 802, repainted on February 14, 1965, was the first Frisco unit to wear the new Mandarin orange and white paint scheme. c) SLSF 816, was the first unit delivered in Frisco's new Mandarin orange and white paint scheme. 10) U25Bs were frequently seen in California on the Santa Fe and were also used on special passenger trains. 11) Retirements- U25Bs 800-807 were retired in 1977 after more than 15 years and 2 million miles of service. Upon their trade-in to GE for new B30-7s, 4 were leased for a short time to power-hungry Conrail wearing Mandarin orange and white but with the Frisco name painted out and still carrying the same Frisco numbers. 12) At least three U25Bs, SLSF 5213, 5215, 5227, were painted BN green. 13) U25B BN 5215, ex-SLSF 813, is believed to be the first SLSF unit painted BN green in December 1980. 14) All units renumbered BN at Springfield, MO. 15) All units scrapped at Mount Vernon, IL.
This is great info, thanks. Does anyone know when the U25Bs were seen in Southern California? Any photographs on the ATSF? I do not recall seeing any, but I was not actively railfanning before 1973 or so. I do remember SLSF SD45s coming into Los Angeles on the Union Pacific (UP) a few times around 1980.
I wonder if they were run across the Quanah, Acme and Pacific (QA&P) and went on to California via the interchange at Floydada, TX?
This is the only shot I have seen of the Frisco on Cajon Pass at Summit, CA. The undated photograph by Chard Walker is probably late 1960s, as I think the units were repainted by the 1970s. The photo is in Louis Marre's book The Diesel's First 50 Years. Larry F.
