Ten Wheller Dimensions of SLSF 568-572 The dimensions were published in the May 2003 MR review. They nicely match the SL-SF 568-572 series 1902 Baldwins. Also close are the 539-548 1898 Baldwins (rebuilt in 1923 to the 3539-3548 0-6-0 switchers) and 487-489 1893 Pittsburg engines. You may check out the entire steam roster on the spread sheet posted on the files section of this web site. I've also attached a shorter spread sheet with just these three classes. I had one of those random "why and when" questions pop into my head recently - I've read that the 1500-class Mountain locomotives came with New York air compressors, but that these were eventually replaced with Westinghouse cross-compound pumps as they were shopped for repairs, overhauls, etc. However, I can't find any dates indicating when this would have been done. From what I can tell, the Pacifics had the Westinghouse pumps added around the time of their upgrades to larger sand domes, bell to the smokebox, etc. (c. 1941-1943) and that the last batch of the 1060-rebuilds to 4-6-4 types in 1940-1941 receiving the same, with the others in the group following suit thereafter. So, I would *guess* that the Mountains would have received these same appliances around the same time frame? I'm sure there was a reason why the Westinghouse pumps were superior, but in the meantime, as long as I know which is appropriate for my 1943 modeling window, that should suffice.
Exscuse me, my last post was posted before this one. Does anyone know of somebody that has a 4-8-2 mountain for sale or is willing to sell that can be rebuilt into the 1522. Contact me at mpchoochoo@yahoo.com THANK YOU!!! Zach Pumphery a.k.a. FRISCO1522MAN from Railroad-Line.com
Were all the 1500/1519 Mtns oil burners? Did any of this class retain the all spoked driver configuration during the "twilight"/white number era? If any were coal burners, with all spoked drivers, what numbers would they be?
Both my husband's grandfathers retired from the Frisco Railroad. I am thinking of getting him Frisco memorabilia for Christmas. Can anyone help me?
My Grandpa built a 1.6 inch live steam model of Frisco 2-8-2, #4158. I will try and post some pics of the locomotive here on the forum as soon as possible. -Greg
Don Wirth's 4500 The result of many hours of cussing and discussing, chopping, straightening, scratchbuilding new tender, all for the purpose of making a presentable model out of Hallmark's 4500. One of three, two coalburners, one oilburner. Never again!
Anyone have any exprience in changing the open frame motor in the Hallmark 2-8-0 to a can motor? What kind of problems am I looking at? Also with the installation of a DCC? Thanks, George
SLSF 1290 by Doug Hughes The famous, and fantastic running, Bachmann Consolidation was advertised as a generic Baldwin. To my eye, the boiler tapers and dome placements are closer to Frisco's Alco's, so I painted mine for 1290. The dog house is scratch built with a female brakeperson inside. No SoundTraxx module - YET. Doug
SLSF 1632 by Doug Hughes Here's mine OOTB. It performed well at an all-steam operating session on the 18th. Doug
SLSF 186 by Dough Hughes A painter named Andy has a commission to paint one of the Hallmarks for 183/187 as used on the Eastern Division Local 11 & 12 in 1929 - yep green. He's trying to talk the client out of it, so I've been sending him some photos. Here are a few I took today of my 186. Doug
SLSF 47192 Stock Car - End view Another end view. Typical late summer green and gold rolling hills. The desert begins 50 miles to the east and the lush, irrigated San Joaquin Valley is about 100 miles. I can hear the UP on the Coast Line. Art
