Hi all, I am searching for any photographs of the Union Stockyards at North Kansas Avenue and West Division Street. Any time period 1930-2000. I would also be interested in any details of Frisco livestock trains at the Springfield Stockyards or the southwest Missouri area. Thanks.
There may be few in here, look at the yard section and or box cars. I do not remember if you can see the yards in any the Sanborn maps posted, so if you need those, we will try to find them. Take care, Paul
There was a nice overhead look in the Winter Classic Trains magazine. I was in Springfield just yesterday with the Alma Drumline for a competition at Kickapoo High School. After which I got to tour the yards and drive around the city with my friends. I went in search of the Highline finding former crossings and all sorts of goodies shoved away. My favorite place though was in Ozark, MO at Lamberts, the only home of the thrown rolls. Great food with an G-gauge train running around. I will be back up there next weekend and if my scanner ever will work I will include the photographs. Ship it on the Frisco! Murphy Millican
Okay, I was going off memory and my best friend's help. Great food either way! Ship it on the Frisco! Murphy Millican
Murphy, Glad to hear Lamberts is still good and the rolls are still being "throwed". Last time I was there was the last time I was in Springfield for a meeting at the Museum. It was probably twelve years or so ago. The place was packed. I also remember going to Lamberts in Sikeston years ago, which I think was the original location. Wonder if that is still there? Good food along the Frisco Lines! Ken
The Lambert's restaurant at Sikeston, MO is still there and in service. I am going there on either Thursday or Friday. I cannot wait to see the Missouri Pacific (MP) depot there in town. Hopefully, some Frisco stuff is still there in town where I can photograph it while on my free time. This is one of the main reasons I joined the band - the great trips. Next week the band is going to Dallas, TX. I cannot wait to see the 4-8-4 SLSF 4500! Ship it on the Frisco! Murphy Millican
Hey Milkman, If you get a chance, stop off at Grant Beach Park and see 4-8-4 SLSF 4524. http://www.rrhistoricalmuseum.zoomshare.com/ The museum is not open, but if you call, they may come meet you there. Phone numbers are (417) 865-6829 or (417) 883-5319. Also check out the following locations. Commercial Street - Yard and the North Jefferson Avenue footbridge. West Mill Street - Where the old depot was and near the Missouri Pacific freight house. It is still there. For some good food, stop by the restaurant Cedars South, 3322 South Campbell Avenue, Springfield, MO 65807. Phone (417) 890-1984. They have a lot of Frisco photographs on the walls. Enjoy yourself!
For Meterbox. 1933-50 Sanborn map of the stockyards. Follow this link to LIFE magazine photograph of the Springfield, MO stockyards. http://images.google.com/hosted/lif...ards&gbv=2&hl=en&sa=G&imgurl=cb5603b267556bee
I got the chance to see the 4-8-4 SLSF 4524 on the visit last Friday. They need to correct the "white walls" painted on the engines wheels. I have been through the museum on a previous visit about four years back. Glad to see another Frisco steamer preserved. I am debating going to Oklahoma just to get rid of the yellow safety strips of the 2-10-0 SLSF 1615. Ship it on the Frisco! Murphy Millican
I am glad that helps. I will check out some sources I have at the library and or history museum to see if I can find any more photographs. I wish I had shot some now, before they tore down the stockyards. But there has to be more of them out there somewhere.
You can go to the Greene County Historical Society building in Springfield on Booneville Street. I think they have several photographs of the stock yards and will copy them for you for 10 cents a piece. Nice photographs too.
