Well ..... we are at the point now here in Frisco's "Ken Shops" that it is time, finally, to spray paint the long talked about and long planned Frisco E8B unit. I am basing it on the AHM E8B, a dummy unit, and I plan to do it up in either the gold/white outline, or the deluxe gold paint schemes using Herald King decals. I haven't decided yet.

Even though such a unit never existed, do any of you have any good suggestions for what red paint to use for the body? Thanks in advance.

    Hi, Ken,
According to an old Herald King decal set, the " Target Red" for the E units is made by mixing equal parts of Caboose Red and Signal Red, from Floquil. I am assuming that the Polly-s paints are the same. That is what I am going to use on my 1/29 E-8 unit. I am hopefull that Tom Stolte of Oddballs can reproduce some 1/29 decals for me. If not, I may have to try making my own.
    Later,
    Dan

I used Floquil's Signal Red when I painted a car for Gordon Mott, which matched his Overland Texas Special car.

I used Testors Red at one time but now like ATSF Red. Both colors are a good match to the Proto 2000 units.

    Good luck on your project.

    Thanks for all the inputs.

I'm trying to match the shade of red on my P2K Frisco E8's for the E8B. So far, I've come pretty close with Modelmaster Insignia Red (enamel), and even closer with PollyScale Caboose Red. I'm a little concerned about spraying PollyScale, however - I've not had great success with that system in the past. However, this red looks like a very opaque, free flowing paint so it might spray well if I keep the spray light. I've had blockage problems with PollyScale in the past.

Have many of you sprayed PollyScale successfully? What thinner do you use - distilled water or the PollyScale airbrush thinner? (The PollyScale paint bottle says to use 10%-15% distilled water for airbrushing, but then they also sell a separate airbrush thinner. It's an alcohol-glycol ether system, and the bottle says use 40% thinner. Go figure!)

I just checked the two test parts I painted (I used the extra pilots off of two of my P2K E8's which are painted P2K red). As it dries, the Modelmaster Insignia Red is coming in even closer than the PollyScale. I usually spray Modelmaster, so no problem with that.

I also have a bottle of Floquil Caboose Red, but it is the xylene system, so I don't want to mess with that. I don't have any Floquil Signal Red as Don and Dan mentioned.

I also have some old AccuPaint Caboose Red which is pretty close, and sprays well, but I don't think I have enough of it to spray the entire model, and it is no longer on the market.

But, it looks like I'm darn close with either the Modelmaster or PollyScale reds.

In answer to a question I've received - nope, no horse name on this puppy. No name, but full Frisco "Racehorse" side livery otherwise. Maybe SLSF 2100. How does that sound? I can easily get the number from the Herald King set - from 2000 and 2021.
