That is awesome! I love Trainz. I just wish I had time to learn how to use it. I haven't started it up for a couple of months. :(

Very nice indeed. What version of Trainz is that? AND... what route is that?

That is very nice. Good graphics and sound. Sure beats old MS Train Simulator.

Judging by the animation, I would guess the TRAINZ version was TS12. K&L Trainz claims the streamlined Pacific will work in Trainz 2009 or 2010, though. It looks worth the $25.00.

Route? Prototype is B&O, Baltimore to Grafton and then on to Cincinnati. I rode through Blanchester, OH on #1 just as it was getting light many times. Trainz Route? That is anyone's guess. Trainzforge (one of K & L's collaborators is associated with Trainzforge) has a set of Harpers Ferry photos, so they may have a B&O-based route, though I could not find it in a quick peek at their website. The terrain modeling certainly looks convincing.

Oh... I dunno'... the "old" MSTS... yes. The lastest incarnation of MSTS... not so sure.

    (Pics below taken in MSTS.)

Wow! That's some fine imagery. Computers are getting crazy realistic.

What is the latest version of MSTS? I thought the latest was 2001 and not supported by MS any longer.

There's a new version of MSTS?

I don't think there is unless I have totally missed it.

There were two patches available from MSTS that addressed a few key issues, in addition to adding new/improved motive power and rolling stock.

There is an improved track version that has a huge assortment of track pieces compared to default called "X Tracks" (and there's also "M Tracks", and Lord knows what else) that gives the route builder almost infinite track work possibilities.

There is also a new hiway/road piece library that essentially does the same for the roadway portion of MSTS as X Tracks does for the track pieces. It's called "New Roads".

X Tracks and New Roads tremendously helped those that enjoy building routes by giving a much higher degree of flexibility.

Then there's the litterally hundreds of user created enhancements that replace/modifiy original MSTS features that were less than steller.

However, the biggest thing to aid MSTS was the "MSTS Bin" project by a Slovakian chap by the name of "George". He basicially de-compiled the original MSTS code, fixed things that were maddening in the orginal, and activated features that were designed-in but never implemented. Essentially 99% of MSTS'ers has one of the last versions of "MSTS Bin" installed into their MSTS operating system.

The end result: "State of the art" routes look nothing like the hokey originals supplied with MSTS, the game runs smoother, can replicate specific prototype track/road arrangements much better, and features work that didn't and new features activated. It's like a whole new ballgame.

So, MSTS is far from dead and is still has a very large and creative following.

However, to fully take advantage of the above, one must become fairly conversant in things MSTS... and many causal V scale hobbiests don't want to take the time.

IMHO, each train game (sim) has its strengths and weaknesses, if a feller (or gal) wants to be a V scaler, very likely you can find a sim platform that floats yer boat and be happy.

As for me and my V scale idiocy: I'm currently using MSTS to recreate my own rendition of the Denver South Park & Pacific from west of Pitkin, CO, up through Woodstock, through Alpine Tunnel, and on past Hancock using X Tracks narrow gauge track (using stub switches, no less), NED 1/3 sec Seamless Digital Elevation Model terrain, and will eventually populate it with my own textures, forest objects, structures, etc that I will create for it. The era is 1884 before the Woodstock avalanche. (BTW, do you know how many $$ this DSP&P route will consume? Essentially: $0. V scale is CHEAP if you learn how to create your own content/etc.)

Yeah, I know... I have a sickness for Colorado narrow gauge... so sue me! :D

    It's all good.
